Culver Community School Corporation Releases Registration Information

The administration and staff members at the Culver Community School Corporation are ready to welcome students for the 2017-2018 school year.

Registration for students in kindergarten through 12th grade is Tuesday, July 18 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET at the Middle/High School Media Center. Parents may pre-register online now by using the Harmony account. An application for free and reduced-price lunches may be completed during online registration, although paper applications will be available during registration. Income verification is required. Dine Around and Concert in Plymouth Today

Discover Plymouth is inviting residents to “discover” a new type of fundraiser. Tonight is the Dine Around and Concert event in Plymouth from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The unique event gives you a choice of two dinner packages. Appetizers are from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. at Reese’s Ribs (served at 101 S. Michigan Street) or Yolanda’s, entrees are from 6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at The Brass Rail or The Office, and desserts are offered 7:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. by Granny’s, La D’Zert Café, and French Press served at the Marshall County Historical Museum.

Juvenile Arrested after Stabbing Incident

A juvenile was seriously injured in a stabbing incident in Plymouth Tuesday night.

Plymouth police say that a juvenile was cut by another juvenile while in the area of the Webster Center. The suspect was later found and taken into custody, but not before resisting officers in the process, according to a press release.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to a trauma center. The juvenile’s condition is unknown.

The suspect was placed in a juvenile detention facility. Police are seeking charges of battery with a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement.

Marshall County Council Supports CASA Grant

The Executive Director of the Court Appointed Special Advocates organization, Chastity Keller, asked the Marshall County Council to approve a grant application.

She said the county matches the $9,868.80 grant with an in-kind match of 15 percent in the amount of $1,480.32 and a cash contribution worth $8,388.48. The county has already received information about the matches in the budget. Since the county has already appropriated the money, Keller just appeared before the council as a formality.

Plymouth City Council Discusses Wetland Mitigation Easement

The Plymouth City Council received paperwork concerning Marshall County’s wetland mitigation project and easement. The plan has also been presented to the Plymouth Park Board for approval.

The wetlands area is located at the end of Plum Street and Walnut by the river. The area is part of the county’s Hickory Road bridge project.

Steve Knies from DLZ said the plan includes the planting of trees along with shrubs native to that area. The plan includes a list of over 1,000 native grasses and other vegetation that is included there.

Bourbon Town Council Discusses Infrastructure Extension for New Development

The Bourbon Town Council received a request to extend utilities to a new Dollar General store on State Road 331 south of U.S. 30.

In order to install the infrastructure required to satisfy the needs of the facility, the town would need to get underneath State Road 331. The council agreed to investigate costs and discuss the issue further at a future meeting.

Culver-Union Township Fire Department Searching for Firefighters

Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Terry Wakefield told the Culver Town Council this week that he is searching for yet another firefighter. He received another resignation this month.

This is the third time he’s notified the council of the need for firefighters. His first plea to accept applications came in March when his department was down to 18 firefighters. There are only 15 on the roster at this time. He said previously that the department used to see around 23 to 25 firefighters on staff. Continue reading →

Culver Lake Fest Begins Today

The annual Culver Lake Fest celebration begins today with events beginning at 4 p.m. ET at the Culver Town Park.

This year’s Grand Marshal of the parade is Elisabeth Davis. She will be 100 this year and she continues to work in the office at Culver Military Academy. She’s been working there since 1936. Yes, Elisabeth Davis has been employed one of Culver’s largest employers for 81 years. According to an article dedicated to Mrs. Davis’ rich history in in the Culver Lake Fest guide, Jeff Kenney writes that she attended school in Culver and took typing and shorthand which helped her gain employment at Culver Military Academy.

Culver Town Officials to Strictly Enforce Smoking Ban at Culver Beach

The Culver Town Council members addressed the issue of smoking at the Culver Town Park and beach when they met Tuesday night.

Park Superintendent Anna Campbell said the ban is difficult to enforce. She does mention to violators that smoking is prohibited, but the authority is not always met with compliance. She noted that there are several posted signs that warn residents that smoking is prohibited at the Culver Town Park and beach.  A call will be made to police officers if residents are not complying with the ordinance or if there are threatening circumstances.

Bourbon Street Department Ready to Submit Community Crossings Grant Application

The Bourbon Street Department finalized their projects to be submitted for the state’s Community Crossing’s grant application.

Communities the size of Bourbon were encouraged to send in applications as the local match was dropped to 25 percent this year. Clerk-Treasurer Kimberly Berger told MAX 98.3 FM News that they will submit a list that benefits from a full $1 million grant match.

Plymouth City Council Approves Ambulance Bid Recommendation

The Plymouth City Council considered a recommendation from Plymouth Fire Chief Rod Miller to purchase a new ambulance.

Chief Miller said two quotes came in after a request was made to gather figures for an ambulance chassis. He reviewed the specifications of each quote and both companies completed the required information on the bid sheets. Chief Miller recommended the lower quote from Crossroads Ambulance Service in Middlebury in the amount of $186,806. The council unanimously approved the quote.

Bremen Council to Review Ambulance Bids in August

The Bremen Town Council members and the Ambulance Board members have sent a notice out to collect bids for a new ambulance service.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said that the current EMS service will be given a 60-day notice around Aug. 1 in order for a new service to occupy the new building at 1237 Plymouth Street. He said the current company’s contract could be renewed if the company submits a bid approved by the town council.

Marshall County Council Supports Culver’s Stellar Communities Projects

Culver Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe and Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist went before the Marshall County Council to ask for a letter of support to include in their application for the Stellar Communities Designation Program grant.

Munroe mentioned that the town is attempting to show that the town is working with the county and that the county can benefit from the projects that are proposed in the Stellar Communities plan. The commissioners have already approved an in-kind donation of the installation of one mile of the walking/biking trail through the Culver Town Park and around Lake Maxinkuckee. The township is also putting forth support of the Cavalier Sports Center for upgrades and additions to the facilities at the Culver Community School Corporation. Several local and county organizations have offered grant match money for the various projects in the plan as well as in-kind donations and volunteer efforts.

Culver Movie Theater Proposals Headed to the CRC

The Culver Town Council discussed the purchase of the Culver Movie Theater and received two proposals that will give the council and the Culver Redevelopment Commission a better idea of what to expect in terms of costs.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist presented proposals from the Troyer Group and SRKM that he said include plans for a public meeting to gather comments on the uses for the theater, a preliminary project budget for outlaying the capital costs for repairs on the building, a structural engineering assessment of the building, and a basic outline for a business plan with annual expenses versus revenue expenses for whatever concept may occupy the building.

Triton School Board Accepts Generous Memorial Donation for Scholarships

The Triton School Board graciously accepted a healthy memorial donation for student scholarships during their meeting Monday night.

Superintendent Donna Burroughs said the donation came from Compton trust in memory of two life-long Triton supporters.

“This scholarship donation was in the amount of $188,611. I think that’s just awesome that they want to support the school. The interest will be given away each year in the form of scholarships for kids who are planning to pursue the study of some trade,” said Burroughs.
