The Plymouth Community School Board will meet tonight. This will be the first regular school board meeting with the corporation’s newly installed superintendent, Andrew Hartley.
The board will consider the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center nurses contract for 2017-2018 and revisions to the classified staff conditions of employment. An agreement for residential services will be discussed as well as an appointment to the library board and the local bargaining unit MASE Insurance Trustee.
Gas prices will drop a few cents this week thanks to lower crude oil prices last week.
Gasbuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan says there was a spike in gas prices just after the Fourth of July holiday.
“The statewide average was about $2.15 on July 4th and now it has jumped to about $2.31,” said DeHaan. “Looking a today versus a week ago prices average $2.31 a gallon today across the state. A week ago prices averaged $2.18 so we’re looking at a pretty big increase at over $.10 a gallon.”
A North Liberty woman was booked into the Marshall County Jail after she was allegedly driving her vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies received a phone call shortly after 6 a.m. on Saturday about a driver hitting a parked car in the parking lot at the LaPaz Café. When officers arrived at the scene they say they found Melody Farnsworth passed out behind the wheel.
Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters said crews are going to work on 20th Road east of State Road 331 with wedging and paving before the crews take a few days to prep for chip and seal work.
Marshall County Commissioner Kurt Garner will appear before the Marshall County Council members to offer the county’s road plan for the Community Crossings grant.
The commissioners approved the list last week and intend to have the input of the council and MACOG before submitting the final list to the state for consideration. The match is 75/25 this year and will be more competitive as smaller communities will be able to put in their project proposals as the local match is lower than in past years.
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members will meet tonight where bids will be opened for the renovation of the city building.
The project includes construction of improvements and expansion of the city office at 124 N. Michigan Street including the clerk-treasurer’s office, mayor’s office, city attorney’s office and the council chambers.
The annual Culver Lake Fest event is set for Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 16.
The festival opens Friday at 4 p.m. ET with craft and food booths available and the sand volleyball tournaments. Registration for the canoe, kayak and SUP Poker Run is at 5:30 p.m. with the awards at 7 p.m. The Miss Maxinkuckee Pageant kicks off at 7 p.m. at the west pavilion and talent at Lake Max is at 8 p.m.
Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery has placed the county under a “watch” level travel advisory. He urges essential travel only.
Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger mentioned to the commissioners this week that he has been meeting with Sheriff Matt Hassel and Clerk Deb Vandemark about fines for ordinance violation tickets.
He said the problem is a number of the ordinances including abandoned vehicles, animals running at large and curfew, to name a few, don’t have specific monetary amounts given for frequent violations of the same ordinances.
The Marshall County Commissioners finalized a list of committee members to serve on the Shady Rest Home Committee.
The commissioners decided to form a committee to determine what uses could fill the Shady Rest Home facility once it is handed back to the county on Aug. 1. The Bowen Center made the decision to cease operations there after some of the new regulations didn’t fit the facility’s needs.
The Bremen Police Department is investigating the possible abduction of an 11-year-old girl.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon around 3 p.m. in the 100 block of North Center Street in Bremen.
Police are looking for a man driving a green Jeep. He is slim, has dark hair and a beard and mustache. He was last seen wearing a gray t-shirt with a green stripe around the sleeve and brown boots.
Crews from the Indiana Department of Transportation are working on a resurfacing project on U.S. 31 from State Road 10 to 13th Road in Marshall County.
According to INDOT Media Relations Director Doug Moats, the passing lane is being milled and underdrains are being installed. Workers are also preparing the subsurface with patching. This part of the process should be complete in two weeks, depending on the weather. Once that is complete, crews will start paving the passing lane. The passing lane should be complete by the end of July.
The Marshall County Commissioners were informed by County Attorney Jim Clevenger that the fees for the recorder’s office need to be updated.
Recorder Marlene Mahler informed Clevenger that the state legislature mandated changes in the fees at the state level and those fees are to be updated at the county level. Clevenger said he drafted an ordinance that updates the fee schedule in the recorder’s office that matches the state mandate.
Breakfast and lunch in the Summer Food Service Program will continue at select sites through July 14.
The Summer Food Service Program assists children in the fight against hunger. Area schools offer free, nutritious meals to children ages 18 and younger while the regular school year is in recess.
Lunches continue to be offered at the Culver Community Elementary School, Culver Community High School, Ora Gospel Chapel, and the Monterey-Tippecanoe Public Library from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Meals are served at the Aubbenaubee Township Community Building from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and the Culver-Union Township Public Library from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
Blood supplies are at critical levels at the local hospitals and the American Red Cross is asking for your help to replenish the inventory.
Red Cross officials say that only three percent of the U.S. population gives blood, which means repeat donors are picking up the slack to help maintain the blood supply. New blood donors are needed at this time of the year when school is out during the summer break. Many blood drives occur during the school year and it is difficult to plan donation drives during the summer vacation.
The Marshall County Commissioners and Health Department Administrator Christine Stinson opened Monday’s commissioner’s meeting to the public for comment on two ordinances that feature fee changes within the health department.
The proposed well ordinance was considered first by the commissioners. No public comment was made. The ordinance was approved on the first reading, but Stinson will be following up with a well company concerning well caps. When those concerns are ironed out, any changes can be amended during the second reading of the ordinance to be considered on Monday, July 17.
The Culver Town Council met in a work session Wednesday afternoon to hear information from the owner of the Culver Movie Theater in his attempt to sell the landmark to the town.
The owner, who would only be referred to as Tom, said he’s put $30,000 into the property in the installation of new sewer and water lines as well as other maintenance measures to shore up the building. He said he paid $100,000 for the property and will sell the property to the town for the amount that he’s into it which is $130,000.
The Marshall County Commissioners approved the list of roads to be considered as part of the Community Crossings Grant in 2018. The list will also be given to the county council and MACOG for consideration.
The grant request will include Beech Road from U.S. 6 to 3B Road, 17th Road/Dewey Street between Linden and South Michigan Street, 9th Road from Pioneer Drive to the county line west, Dogwood Road from the county line to State Road 331, old U.S. 31 in LaPaz to Tyler Road, and 13th Road from State Road 17 to Olive Trail.

An email message for returning students will include a snapcode that will link the student directly to individual information. Instructions will also describe how to access the online registration system. New students must call the administration office to be provided with a registration snapcode identification information.
The Marshall County Commissioners approved an in-kind contribution to assist the Town of Culver in a quest to become a stellar community.
Culver Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe explained to the commissioners that other Stellar Communities Designation Program Grant candidates have included supporting documentation from partnerships with county and town entities in their applications. Munroe asked the commissioners for support of the bike/pedestrian trail around Lake Maxinkuckee that lies within their plans for the Stellar Communities grant.
