Road Paving in Downtown Plymouth to Occur All Week
The State Road 17 resurfacing project is ongoing in the downtown Plymouth area. There will be no parking on both sides of Michigan Street so crews can complete the paving process.
INDOT Media Relations Director Doug Moats told MAX 98.3 FM News that paving will continue through the week. Flaggers are directing traffic and Moats notes motorists should expect delays. He encourages drivers to avoid driving on Michigan Street to reduce hazards and further delays. Parking is available on side streets and in public parking lots in the downtown area to access downtown businesses.
Motorists may also expect delays as State Road 17 winds south of Michigan Street.
Marshall County Highway Department Working on Paving Schedule
Work should be done to reclaim roads by the end of this week. Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters told the commissioners that he anticipates work on 7th Road should be complete this week after repairs are made to some equipment.
The highway workers plan to pave Lilac Road as it’s next on the list. Peters hopes to use the new paving machine on Beech Road when it arrives later this month.
Court Date Pending for Vincent Carnegie

An initial hearing has not been set in Marshall County Superior Court 2 for a Plymouth man suspected of holding a woman against her will and brandishing a handgun threatening to kill himself and pointing the weapon at police.
The incident happened on Friday, May 26, when Vincent Carnegie allegedly handcuffed a woman while she lay in her bed with her face covered with a washcloth that had been doused in a substance. Carnegie then reportedly forced the woman from the home in the 11,000 block of Michigan Road in Plymouth. They left the residence in her car while she was still in handcuffs, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Plymouth School Board to Announce New Superintendent Tomorrow
The Plymouth Community School Board members are expected to announce a new superintendent during their regular school board meeting tomorrow night.
The board held a public hearing on the new superintendent’s contract on Wednesday, May 31 which included a $5,000 base salary increase to $120,000. The contract will be in effect July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2020.
John Glenn School Board to Meet Tonight

The John Glenn School Board will meet tonight with several items of discussion on the agenda.
The board will approve digital and/or print textbooks for Urey Middle School in the amount of $96,692.43. The board is also looking to approve additions to the summer school sessions and approve a proposed curriculum and/or pacing guides for Math, Language Arts and Science at Urey Middle School. IRead 3 results will also be presented to the board.
The John Glenn School Board will meet at 7 p.m. in the meeting room in the school’s administration building.
House Fire Ruled Accidental
A house fire in Plymouth last Thursday has been ruled accidental.
The Indiana State Fire Marshal was at the John Montgomery residence at 10548 King Road in Plymouth on Monday, June 5. With an investigation led by the Plymouth Fire Department Division of Investigations and the Indiana State Fire Marshal, the fire was determined to have started by an electrical issue in the garage. According to Plymouth Fire Chief Rod Miller, the investigation is now closed.
Plymouth Man Charged with Dealing Meth

A Plymouth man is the Marshall County Jail after officers allegedly found him in possession of drugs.
A patrolman with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, with the assistance of officers from the Plymouth Police Department, executed an arrest warrant at the Red Rock Inn on Saturday evening. When Wesley Drew Henry, 27, was placed into police custody on a warrant, officers allegedly found several grams of methamphetamine and marijuana in his possession along with drug paraphernalia.
South Bend Man Arrested in Theft, Pursuit Incident
A South Bend man was taken into custody early Monday morning after allegedly stealing items from a Plymouth business and fleeing.
A Walmart representative notified police of a theft from the store. Police say the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Sulton Williams, pushed a cart full of unpaid items out of the store and into an awaiting vehicle with a male driver. Williams reportedly put a computer, DVD player and some cat food into the white Ford Fusion, but left behind other items and fled in the vehicle.
Automated Weather Observation System to Go Live in June
The test mode time frame for the Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) at the Plymouth Municipal Airport has been certified by the FAA and will be operational this month.
The AWOS III Weather Station will provide temperature, dew point, barometric pressures, wind direction, wind velocity, bottom and top of cloud height, and precipitation. The information will be available to the flying public, pilots flying under instrument conditions and pilots flying into the Plymouth Municipal Airport. This is vital for pilots as they can monitor more specific weather conditions in Plymouth and the surrounding area so they can better measure their landing decision height. Currently, the closest weather information pilots obtain is what South Bend’s Weather Station provides.
Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today

The Marshall County Commissioners have several action and discussion items on the agenda for their meeting this morning.
Highway Administrator Laurie Baker and Highway Supervisor Jason Peters will have an update for the board. Jackie Wright from the Marshall County Council on Aging will present the Federal Transit Act Resolution while Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery will review an emergency disaster recovery document.
Culver Police Chief Hiring Officers
Culver Police Chief Wayne Bean is looking to hire officers for the department.
He told the Culver Town Council during their last meeting that one officer resigned the previous day and he will replace that officer. He is already reviewing applications for another vacancy in the department. As he reviews the applications, Chief Bean said he may go ahead and hire two in this round. He may choose to re-advertise for officers to gather more applications.
Free Meals at Six Locations for Culver-Area Students
The Summer Food Service Program will assist Culver and area students at six different sites this summer.
Culver Community School Food Services Director Carin Clifton says children ages 18 and younger and people with disabilities who are still enrolled in K-12 educational programming are welcome to eat free meals this summer. She encourages students to take part in this opportunity to receive a nutritional meal. All meals must be eaten on site.
State Funding Available to Help Communities Improve Gathering Spaces
Local communities can apply for state funding to make better gathering spaces. The state’s launching a third round of Place Based Investment Funds.
Hoosier Hunters Record Near Record Turkey Harvest
Indiana posted its third-highest spring turkey harvest on record in 2017. DNR officials say hunters statewide harvested more than 13,000 wild turkeys. That’s an increase of 7-percent from the 12,081 turkeys taken last spring. Continue reading
Concrete Portion of Microsurfacing Project in Plymouth Nearly Complete
The removal and replacement of concrete as part of the microsurfacing project in Plymouth will be done on Monday or Tuesday. According to Pavement Solutions, Inc. Owner Chris Oakes, E&B Paving is on schedule with this part of the project.
Existing pavement markings will be removed and replaced with temporary paint markings. That process will begin on Monday, June 5. Work will be done by Traffic Control Specialists of Knox on Oak Street from U.S. 30 to State Road 17, Jefferson Street from west of the Oak Street intersection to 5th Street, and Oakhill Avenue from South Michigan Street to city limits.
Safe Routes to School Construction in Culver Underway
The second round of the Safe Routes to School project in Culver is just getting started.
Sidewalks will be installed on the south side of Academy Street from School Street to Lake Shore and on College Avenue.
Phend and Brown was contracted to complete the work at a cost of $330,000. The Town of Culver secured grant money for this project.
Yellow River Festival Begins Today
The annual Yellow River Festival opens today in River Park Square in Plymouth. It all begins at 10 a.m. with a full lineup of entertainment, food, music and living history.
If you see a person dressed in clothing that may look like he or she stepped out of the 1800s or early 1900s, don’t be afraid to stop them and ask about their role at the festival. Several volunteers will be portraying historic people and they want to tell you their history.
Several reenactments are scheduled during the event including events happening during World War II.
Earthworks Summer Curriculum Released
This summer’s curriculum for the Earthworks organization at The Center at Donaldson is based on the DNR’s “Project Wild” program. This curriculum provides a wide range of environmental activities for children.
According to Adam Thada, Ecological Relationships Director at The Center at Donaldson, trail cameras will be installed to study the lives of the wildlife on campus. Children participating in the program will learn about the animals seen on campus and their habitat.
NIPSCO Officials Stress Severe Weather Preparedness
Now that summer appears to be here to stay, NIPSCO officials remind customers to prepare for possible severe weather.
Get a storm preparedness kit together before inclement weather strikes. It should include essential medicines, nonperishable food, water, flashlights, a fully-charged cell phone, portable radio and extra batteries.
