Argos Town Council Raises Trash Rates Slightly to Address Existing Shortfall

Trash rates in Argos were raised slightly when Town Council members met last Wednesday.

Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney explained that officials compared how much they were charging to how much they were paying for the services and realized that they were not collecting enough to fully pay their contract with Republic Services. Argos Town Council Approves Marshall County Multi-Hazard Emergency Management Mitigation Plan

Argos Town Council members approved a resolution last week that formally adopts the Marshall County Multi-Hazard Emergency Management Mitigation Plan.

Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery recently informed all town and city officials within the county that the plan was ready to be approved by each jurisdiction that participated in the mitigation planning process. Continue reading

Argos Town Council Approves $3,000 Annual Donation to the Marshall County Council on Aging

Argos Town Council members approved a $3,000 donation to the Marshall County Council on Aging when they met Wednesday night.

The executive director of the organization, Jacqueline Wright, came before the council to request a donation of $1,000 to $3,000 in order to help cover operation costs. She informed members that Argos has a substantial aging population.

Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney explained that since the organization provides a valuable service to the community, members voted to give the maximum amount requested. Continue reading

Argos Officials and Residents Focused on Community and Economic Development

The Town of Argos is geared toward growth, and officials are currently taking steps to show it.

Aside from working with the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation to construct a manufacturing center at the Dewey Street industrial park, town officials are also working in conjunction with the Argos Community Development Corporation on a potential housing development at the Colonial Estates property. Argos Town Council Members Discuss Fire Department Billing Possibilities

The possibility of charging for some additional fire department calls was briefly discussed during the Argos Town Council meeting last Wednesday.

Currently, the town only bills for structure fires. However, Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney explained that the problem is that even when someone is billed, they don’t always follow through with a payment.

Since officials are now considering billing for HAZMAT calls and potentially others, Mullaney suggested that they utilize the same company they use for EMS billing. Continue reading

Building Commissioner Chuck Dewitt Informs Argos Town Council of Variance Procedure

The Argos Town Council recently entered into an agreement with Marshall County Building Commissioner Chuck Dewitt for planning and zoning assistance. According to Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney, his help is already paying off.

“We kind of hired Chuck Dewitt as an advisor to our plan commission and board of zoning to help us better understand some of the things that needed to be done.” Mullaney explained, “Matters would be heard before the town council that we not have realized were a zoning issue or a plan commission issue and they’re now correcting that.” Continue reading

Marshall County Historical Society Considers Summer Architecture Tour of Argos

The possibility of a summertime architecture tour around Argos is being considered by town council members.

Council member Suzanne Umbaugh was contacted by a Marshall County Historical Society Museum representative about potentially doing a walking or driving tour of various structures in the town.

Historical Society Assistant Director Sue Irwin stated the tour would focus on Argos buildings that were designed by William Lake Foker, an accomplished stonemason of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Continue reading

Argos Town Council Approves Property Subdivision Request from Marshall County Economic Development Corporation

Argos Town Council members unanimously agreed to allow the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation to subdivide approximately 17 acres of property at their meeting Wednesday night.

Town Attorney Derek Jones explained that the MCEDC initially intended to utilize 15 acres for the manufacturing center project at the Dewey Street property so they came before the council to request the additional acreage.

Argos Town Council Members Receive Presentation About Local Business Group ‘Discover Argos’

Local business owner Judy Richards came before the Argos Town Council last month, seeking permission to utilize the town’s name in the title a local business group.

Richards explained that group would be called Discover Argos and would work to benefit local businesses, while simultaneously assisting the town as a whole.

“We spoke with the Town Council about why we needed this committee which was because it will benefit Argos by creating more jobs, more housing, downtown improvements, more events for the local residents to go to which will in turn mean less travel for local residents.” She explained, “It will benefit our business owners because that means more visitors to Argos.” Continue reading

Argos Town Council Continues to Seek Members for Various Board Positions

When Argos Town Council members met earlier this month, they discussed available openings in the Marshall County Tourism Board, the Plan Commission, the Park Board and the Redevelopment Commission.

According to the draft minutes provided, one person submitted a letter of interest for the park board. Town council members agreed to wait another 30 days from when they met on November 15th, to see if any more individuals apply for the open positions. Continue reading
