Marshall County Commissioners Discuss CASA Grant

Marshall County CASA Executive Director Chastity Keller asked the Marshall County Commissioners this week for support in applying for a matching grant through the state. The grant has already been approved and the money allocated so the grant approval is the only step needed.

The commissioners give CASA support in an in-kind contribution toward the grant. The commissioners granted permission for the CASA volunteers to use office space in the courthouse to conduct business. The office space allows for tech support, security and utility assistance.

Indiana State Trooper Promoted to Sergeant, PIO at Bremen Post

Trooper Ted Bohner is the new Public Information Officer for the Indiana State Police Bremen Post. He was recently promoted to sergeant to serve in the capacity after successfully completing written testing and a competitive interview process.

He is a ten-year veteran of the Indiana State Police having graduated from Fairfield High School in Goshen and seeking post-secondary education at Taylor University in Fort Wayne.

Marshall County Commissioners Consider Vacating Forest Drive

The Marshall County Commissioners were petitioned with a request to vacate Forest Drive between 11th Road and U.S. 31 that runs along the west line of Carl Stockberger’s property in the county.

The road was dedicated in 1996 and had a curve in it which was later modified to straighten out the road. Plan Director Ralph Booker said the intention for that road was to give residents access to 11th Road in the potential development of a subdivision there. The development never occurred.

A public hearing was opened to gather comments about the possible vacation of the road and no comments were made.

Marshall County Commissioners Approve K9 Retirement

Marshall County Sheriff Hassel told the Marshall County Commissioners this week that K9 handler, Brandon Cooper, has accepted a position on the Plymouth Fire Department and will no longer be a K9 officer. Sheriff Hassel said a decision had to made about the future of the K9 at the sheriff’s department.

“In doing some research on K9 Arras, it will be nine this year leaving a limited time left on its service lift,” said Sheriff Hassel. “The K9 was purchased through funds from the Culver Lake Maxinkuckee Lake Association and I asked them what they would like to see. I gave them options – let the officer purchase the dog, let the dog go with the officer or go ahead and train somebody to work with the dog over the next two years. Their recommendation was to go ahead and let the dog go with the officer.”

Second Reading Discussed on Health Department Ordinances

The health department’s fee schedule ordinance and the ordinance pertaining to well installation, maintenance and operation were brought before the Marshall County Commissioners on Monday.

Health Administrator Christine Stinson told the commissioners that she discussed well caps with a well drilling operator and changed requirements to the abandonment of wells. She went to the DNR rule which satisfied the issue with wording in the ordinance.

Culvert Issue to be Considered by Plymouth Redevelopment Commission

David Miller from Vanco Development requested help from the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission with funding a $35,000 downstream impact study to ultimately replace a culvert under Pioneer Drive. The culvert has the potential to cause drainage and flood plain issues when the city expands development projects on the Tech Farm site and the surrounding area.

He explained that the culvert adjacent to his property located under the road isn’t maintained by his company. In fact, the city, county and state don’t have rights to maintain the culvert. Essentially, it lies within the drainage board’s property on the state’s right of way.

John Glenn School Board Approves Textbook Rental Fees

The John Glenn School Board approved textbook rental fees this week.

Fees reflect the purchase of science textbook adoption and technology fees. New science textbooks hadn’t been purchased in 12 years. Teachers and administrators have found that teaching with both the digital component and textbooks enhance learning. Not all students learn as easily with just a textbook or use of a technology device.

Marshall County DUI Task Force Dedicated to Keep Impaired Drivers off Roads

Marshall County DUI Task Force officers dedicated 229.5 hours of extra patrol to rid the roads of impaired drivers from October 2016 to June 2017. Officers also issued a total of 721 citations and warnings. Several arrests were made during that same time. Charges included operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating without ever receiving a license, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, driving while suspended, and many others.

Ancilla College Open House Set for Today

Officials at Ancilla College invite you to an open house today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on the campus.

Prospective students, high school athletes, adults, and military veterans are invited to the event to inquire about earning a college degree. The general public is also invited to learn more about the facility that holds a bright spot in Marshall County.

Three Arrested on Check Fraud, Theft Charges

Three people are in custody on check fraud and theft charges from CJ Poly in Plymouth.

An investigation by the Plymouth Police Department reportedly found that a previous employee, Autumn Burnham, created checks without authorization. Burnham, 32, along with 35-year-old Jennifer L. Krueger and 39-year-old Wendy A. Milton allegedly cashed these checks totaling approximately $20,000 at Lake City Bank in Plymouth.

Plymouth Redevelopment Commission Opens City Building Renovation Bids

Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi opened three bids for the proposed city renovation project during the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission meeting Tuesday night.

Ziolkowski Construction, Inc. out of South Bend turned in a total base bid of $2,728,000 while Gibson Lewis, LLC out of Mishawaka submitted a bid of $2,654,100. The last bid opened was from Michiana Contracting, Inc. in Plymouth in the amount of $2,198,700.

Marshall County Attorney to Submit Paperwork to Purdue Extension

Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger this week discussed the Memorandum of Understanding between the county and the Marshall County 4-H Fair Board.

The document protects the county from any financial obligation in its capacity to act as a pass through vehicle for a Community Development Block Grant worth $500,000. The grant will help fund a multi-purpose building on the fairgrounds in Argos.

Marshall County Extension Director Karen Richey asked Clevenger for a copy of the document to send to the Purdue University Extension office for their approval as the project includes 4-H and a 4-H organization.

The document has not been signed so the topic will be reviewed at the commissioners’ next meeting.

John Glenn School Board Hires New Band Director

A new leader will guide the John Glenn music department at the high school.

The John Glenn School Board welcomed Nathanael Suddeth to the school corporation Tuesday night as they approved his appointment to the position. He along with four other candidates underwent a rigorous interview process which included administrative team interviews, previous and current choral director input and consulting of the band booster president. Two band students also had a chance to interview the candidates.

Accident Injures Motorcyclist in Marshall County

A Plymouth man sustained serious injuries in an accident on State Road 17 and Pioneer Drive in Marshall County.

On Monday morning shortly after 10 a.m., Marshall County police say Mary Large of Plymouth was turning north in her Ford truck onto Pioneer Drive and failed to yield to the right of way. She reportedly turned into Clint Maddox of Plymouth who was riding his motorcycle westbound on State Road 17. The impact ejected Maddox from his motorcycle. Police say he sustained significant injuries. He was airlifted from the scene.
