The John Glenn School Board approved an action to place Superintendent Richard Reese as the school’s representative on the St. Joseph/Elkhart County Head Start Consortium Board of Directors.
Superintendent Reese explained that the John Glenn School Corporation is part of the head start consortium that encompasses about 10 school corporations. Head start classes are available at the local school corporation for students ages three and four. There are certain restrictions.
The Internal Revenue Service is preparing to turn seriously delinquent accounts over to private-sector collection agencies. The agency notes these are unpaid individual tax obligations that are not currently being worked by IRS collection employees and often were assessed by the tax agency several years ago. The Marshall County Commissioners reviewed an agreement for the Apple Road bridge project.
The commissioners approved a bid submitted by LaPorte Construction at a meeting in March. Highway Administrator Laurie Baker told the commissioners that the agreement between the county and the contractor is now needed so the project can move forward.
The John Glenn School Board members opened their meeting to the public to gather comments on the donation of property at 123 Shamrock Street by the Hiler family to the John Glenn Education Foundation.
The family initially donated the property to the corporation at the end of 2015. Superintendent Richard Reese explained this was before the John Glenn Education Foundation was officially organized.
“The Hilers were comfortable with giving it to the school corporation with the knowledge that once the foundation became functional that we would exercise whatever process it takes to get this to the foundation,” said Reese.
Students participating in Culver Community High School’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) organization are headed to a national event in May.
The recent state BPA conference in Indianapolis featured 2,000 students and five Culver students qualified for the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.
The income tax filing deadline is less than two weeks away. Many taxpayers may be rushing to complete paperwork to make the filing deadline which can lead to common errors.
The Internal Revenue Service urges taxpayers to slow down and take time to fill out required forms correctly. If forms are not completed correctly, it will likely take the IRS more time to process the paperwork.
The Marshall County Commissioners held a public hearing Monday morning to gather public input on the reestablishment of the Cumulative Capital Development Fund at the maximum rate.
The Cumulative Capital Development Fund has existed in the budget for many years, but the current rate is $.0167 per $100 of assessed valuation which covers a few capital costs. Commissioner Kurt Garner stated that the increase of $.0333 per $100 of assessed valuation means $16.40 per $100,000 of assessed value. If the typical homeowner has a mortgage exemption and homestead credit, it comes to about $5.50 a year.
Officials involved in the application for the Stellar Communities Program designation will meet today to discuss several aspects of the application process.
The committee will review potential lighter, quicker and cheaper projects as required in this year’s application. These are projects that are smaller in scale and less than $5,000. The committee will decide on which projects to include in the application tonight.
The John Glenn School Board will entertain public comment tonight on a property donation by the Hiler family.
The corporation received the donation of the property at 123 Shamrock Street at the end of 2015. The school board plans to donate it to the newly formed John Glenn Education Foundation in an action that is expected to take place after the public hearing. The property will then be sold with the proceeds to benefit the foundation.
April marks the beginning of the highway construction season. The Indiana Department of Transportation urges motorists to slow down in construction zones.
This will be a busy road construction season. INDOT will oversee more than 300 construction contracts totaling more than $1 billion in capital investment. Pavement resurfacing will encompass 3,047 miles. Work will focus on improving traffic mobility and safety. Dozens of interchanges and intersections will be improved across the state. INDOT and its contractors will also rehabilitate or construct 486 bridges and small structures.

A Walkerton man was taken to the hospital Monday after reportedly driving a pickup truck into a rural Marshall County home. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department says it happened around 7:20 a.m. in the 1500 block of Tamarack Road near Walkerton. According to the incident report, the pickup went off the roadway and proceeded to go “completely through the house.” Continue reading
A Plymouth man was arrested early Saturday morning, after police reportedly found cocaine and marijuana during a traffic stop. A vehicle driven by Diego Gonzalez, 21, was pulled over on 9A Road near Suter Drive around midnight Saturday, according to the Marshall County Police Department. Continue reading
A Texas man is charged with kidnapping after taking a Bremen teen out of state.
Family members of a 14-year-old juvenile contacted the Bremen Police Department to report the incident on Thursday, March 30. Police say it was believed that she left the area with an unknown Hispanic man.
A Plymouth man was booked into the Marshall County Jail after reportedly running into a pole at 1505 N. Michigan Street and fleeing the scene.
According to a report filed by the Plymouth Police Department, officers arrived at the scene shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Saturday where they found a damaged white Chevrolet Impala without a driver. The vehicle hit a NIPSCO pole at that location and snapped the pole in half. The broken pole fell on top of the car while power lines scattered across N. Michigan Street.
The Marshall County Commissioners have set aside time today to hear public comment on the proposed tax increase to help reestablish the Cumulative Capital Development Fund to the maximum point. A public hearing on the matter is set for 9 a.m.
The Culver Community School Board is moving ahead with finding another superintendent.
Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell is leaving the corporation and entering retirement on June 30. He has been with the Culver Community School Corporation for 28 years in various roles: teaching, coach, assistant principal, principal, and director of operations. Kitchell assumed the interim superintendent’s position at the end of December 2015 when then-superintendent Vicki McGuire resigned to fill a similar position at a different school corporation.
Plymouth Street Superintendent Jim Marquardt presented to the city council the proposed list of sidewalks the street crew will be working on this season.
Marquardt told the city council that the list will wrap up a major road in town
The cafeteria staff at the Culver Community School Corporation has been busy during this spring break to offer children healthy meals.
Carin Clifton, Food Services Director at the Culver schools, said about 10 children a day were served breakfast while up to 25 children took advantage of lunch during last week’s first week of spring break.
