Urey Middle School seventh grade students in Walkerton recently spent the day at Manchester College to get an idea about classes, general admission and tuition costs. The students also got a tour of the campus and were able to ask questions about college experiences from Manchester students.

The school board members are expected to approve the staff for the first summer school session and textbook adoption will be considered for the Family and Consumer Science, Business and Agriculture classes.
John Glenn School Staff to Undergo Safety Training
The staff at the John Glenn School Corporation will undergo safety training soon.
Superintendent Richard Reese told the school board members last week that active shooter training with the staff as well as cyber bullying will be offered. Those discussions will include the transportation staff with a focus on other types of safety.
John Glenn School Board Approves Computer Purchase
The John Glenn School Board members took action to approve the purchase of computers for students during their Tuesday night meeting.
The students in grades three through six at North Liberty Elementary School and Urey Middle School in Walkerton will receive new Chromebooks. The current devices needed to be replaced.
Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library Project is Underway
Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library Director Traci Stewart said that ground breaking at the site for the new library took place earlier this month. However, in the next few weeks, construction will become more visible since work below the surface has been completed and now crews can begin working on things above ground.
Stewart said that foundation footings have already been installed, as well as drainage lines and a sewage system. She said this week, construction crews from the Elkhart based company Brown and Brown will be pouring the floors and putting up walls. Continue reading
John Glenn School Board Approves Additional Teaching Position at Middle School
The John Glenn School Board voted Tuesday night to approve an additional teaching position at Urey Middle School. The position will be active at the beginning of next school year.
Superintendent Richard Reese explained to the board members that one new teacher will be hired to help teach English/Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies to create an additional section of classes in the seventh grade. The estimated number of students entering the seventh grade next year is about 180 which is approximately 30 students more than this year. It is the thought that the additional position would alleviate the potential of class overcrowding.
Recovering Addict Shares Story With Local Students
With sobriety, anything is possible. That’s the message addict turned triathlete Todd Crandell is sharing with students in Starke and Marshall Counties during Red Ribbon Week. He first tried alcohol when he was 13. Crandall says his life was” normal on the outside” but he was pretty emotionally distraught due to his Mom’s suicide 10 years earlier due to her struggles with addiction.
“I had a giant void that I was looking for something to fill it with, and unfortunately trying alcohol at age 13 was the catalyst for the next 13 years of destruction,” Crandall said.
He says he used “anything I could get my hands on” to try to numb the pain. Continue reading
