John Glenn School Staff to Undergo Safety Training

The staff at the John Glenn School Corporation will undergo safety training soon.

Superintendent Richard Reese told the school board members last week that active shooter training with the staff as well as cyber bullying will be offered. Those discussions will include the transportation staff with a focus on other types of safety.

Reese also mentioned that quick action was taken concerning an alleged threat to a student at the Urey Middle School. Principal Mark Maudlin told MAX News that the Walkerton Police Department received a notice that a student who does not attend John Glenn schools threatened a student at Urey Middle School, but no evidence could be produced concerning the alleged threat. Maudlin said that although there was no evidence of the alleged threat, school officials took it very seriously and initiated safety procedures.

Reese said the training sessions will help everyone learn strategies and come together against violence.

“As proactive as we can be we are trying to do that,” said Reese. “We are aware. I think we’re all highly in tune as well as our School Resource Officers who are here four days a week. We have the availability of local police that respond quickly. Mr. Maudlin told me the other day that within five minutes of the situation arising, there were four police officers here in our building.”

The training sessions will be set in April as soon as an official from St. Joseph County can schedule them.
