The residential recovery program David’s Courage was recently selected as a Lowe’s Heroes project!
Through this program, Lowe’s employees team up and adopt a volunteer project with local nonprofit organizations and schools. They donate materials and their time to assist with restoration efforts.
As David’s Courage continues to work on their “Open the Doors” campaign, these volunteers will contribute valuable construction assistance to help complete repairs and renovations at the transitional residency facility that will be for individuals recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. David’s Courage Representatives Sign Transfer Agreement
The Shady Rest Home transfer agreement between Marshall County and the facilitators of David’s Courage is now official.
David’s Courage, Inc. and Marshall County Arrive at Transfer Agreement
The transfer contract between David’s Courage, Inc. and Marshall County for occupancy of the Shady Rest Home has been approved with a few modifications.
According to County Attorney Jim Clevenger, facilitators Gregg Erickson and Ted Hayden asked the commissioners to drop the requirement that the facility continue to be named Shady Rest Home. A different designation was not provided at the time of discussions.

Marshall County Commissioners Discuss Proposed Program at Shady Rest Facility
The Marshall County Commissioners discussed the Shady Rest Committee’s recommendation of allowing the addiction recovery program, David’s Courage, to be run out of the Shady Rest Home on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth.
Committee Chair and County Commissioner Kurt Garner explained that the committee approved a favorable recommendation for the program and if the commissioners did not decide to approve the program then the county would divest the property.

After weighing public opinions that range from benefits to the community to safety and security concerns, the Shady Rest Home Committee Thursday afternoon approved a recommendation to the commissioners with a majority vote.

Last night’s Shady Rest Committee public hearing was emotionally charged with various members of the community coming out to show support, ask questions and express concerns over Ted Hayden and Gregg Erickson’s proposal to utilize the county building for an addiction recovery facility.

Shady Rest Home Committee to Hold Public Hearing Wednesday Night
The Shady Rest Home Committee members are asking for public input Wednesday night concerning the possible use of the Shady Rest Home facility by a non-profit organization.
The committee is considering a proposal from Gregg Erickson and Ted Hayden that would provide a structured recovery program for drug or alcohol offenders recommended to the program by Marshall County Community Corrections. The program, called “David’s Choice”, would assist recovering addicts for six to nine months on getting a job, completing treatment, conducting community service, and obtaining other life and job skills.
Shady Rest Home Committee to Hold Public Input Session
The members of the Shady Rest Home Committee met with Gregg Erickson and his wife, Kelly, to go over the business plan for a proposed addiction recovery program at the county-owned Shady Rest Home in Plymouth.
The business plan outlined expenditures and revenues and more information about a structured recovery program for drug or alcohol offenders recommended to the program by Marshall County Community Corrections. The program, called “David’s Choice”, would assist recovering addicts for six to nine months on getting a job, completing treatment, conducting community service, and obtaining other life and job skills.
Funds Transfer Approved for Utilities at Shady Rest Home, County Facilities
The Marshall County Council members were tasked with approving the transfer of funds to ensure payment of utilities at the Shady Rest Home and for other county facilities for the remainder of the year.
The county received the operation of the county home on Lincoln Highway in August when the Bowen Center decided to cease operations at the facility. The structure has been vacant since that time, but a nine-member Shady Rest Home committee is working to find a tenant to bring needed services to aid the residents of Marshall County.
Shady Rest Committee has Unanswered Questions
The Shady Rest Home Committee expressed concerns about a business plan and financial sustainability of a potential entity hoping to occupy the Shady Rest Home on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth.
The committee members on Tuesday afternoon were in agreement that the proposal given by Ted Hayden and Gregg Erickson for an addiction recovery service at the Shady Rest Home is a program worthy of utilizing the space owned by the county, but whether or not they can be financially responsible is still a question.

Marshall County Commissioner Kurt Garner reminded fellow Commissioners Kevin Overmyer and Mike Delp this week that the Shady Rest Committee will be meeting again on Tuesday to discuss a proposal for use of the county home on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth.

Proposal Made to Shady Rest Committee on County Home Use
The Shady Rest Committee heard a proposal from Ted Hayden and Gregg Erickson who have teamed up to provide information on a proposed addiction recovery service at the Shady Rest Home on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth. The Shady Rest Committee felt their offer of these services would greatly impact the community in the most effective way.
Hayden is currently working with the Prairie View Adult Services and sees a need with individuals seeking treatment from the grasp of addiction. He works with adolescent males and addiction issues. Erickson knows the need as his son previously dealt with a similar addiction. The pair wants to provide help to provide a therapeutic community and offer services to help get an addict a more positive way of life.
Shady Rest Committee to Hear Proposals
The Shady Rest Committee is set to hear proposals on the use of the county home on Lincoln Highway. The nine-member committee received four soft proposals for the use of the building at a meeting earlier this month. They will now gather more information about two entities that submitted proposals including background, purpose and community impact.
Shady Rest Committee Considers Proposals for Occupancy at County Home
The committee overseeing the potential future operations of the Shady Rest Home met Tuesday afternoon to review four proposals that were submitted to offer services out of the county home.
The committee had proposals from Save the Old Properties, or S.T.O.P., Prairie View Adult Services, Gregg Erickson, and Glenn Peterson. The four offered services ranging from an intergenerational community, wellness and addiction recovery services.
