Bids have been awarded, but now the Town of Culver is focusing on just how to fund upgrades to their water treatment facility.
The Culver Town Council has set a special meeting for June 2nd to adopt an ordinance allowing bonds to be issued to fund the $1.7-million. A separate ordinance specifying new rates for water consumption will also be introduced at the June 2nd meeting. The water rate ordinance will likely be adopted in mid-June.

The American Red Cross office in Plymouth is slated to close on June 30. Northern Indiana Regional Executive Director Sue Gulley says services and programs will still be offered. She adds shutting the office down will allow the nonprofit organization to combine valuable resources while still providing programs like CPR training(refer AHA BLS CPR Classes by Intouch CPR ), disaster response and blood drives. Marshall County Red Cross volunteer Carol Arnett works closely with emergency management and other local officials when disasters like gas leaks, fires and floods occur. She says local volunteers can respond within minutes versus the hours it takes for South Bend to mobilize.

The Culver Town Council is working its way through new guidelines for the annexation of property.
Culver is currently considering annexing land to its Northwest to increase the Town’s assessed valuation and potentially offer the land up for development. Surveys have been sent to the landowners affected by any future decisions. 22 have been returned.

The Plymouth Board of Works awarded the bid for mill and fill work to the contractor with the lowest bid for the project. Bristol-based Niblock will do the work for slightly more than $488,000. An area not-for-profit will soon begin construction on another home.
Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County says it is ready to break ground on its 17th family home. The group dedicates itself to ensuring every person has what they consider a decent place to live.
Officials at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth have extended bids on a state-of-the-art doghouse built as a class project for another week. Fifth grade students and their teachers built the canine palace with grant funds as part of a mentoring project. They decided to auction it off and donate proceeds to the Marshall County Humane Society. The sale was supposed to end last Friday, but a last-minute bid of $350 from a Mishawaka family and a flurry of phone calls prompted them to set a new deadline. Continue reading

Two retiring merit board officers were honored this week for their dedicated years of service to Marshall County.
Marshall County Sheriff’s Captain Dan Butts presented plaques to Dr. Jim Bottorff and Orion “Bud” Treat who served on the Marshall County Merit Board for 44 years apiece. The recognition ceremony was held during the Marshall County Commissioners meeting on Monday.
Officials with the AAA Hoosier Motor Club predicts a busy travel holiday this Memorial Day weekend. They predict Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the travel period which is defined as Thursday, May 21 to Monday, May 25.
Most drivers will likely pay the lowest Memorial Day gas prices in at least five years.
According to AAA, today’s national average price is $2.66 which is $1.01 less than last year. AAA predicts most U.S. travelers will pay the cheapest Memorial Day gas prices in at least five years. Indiana’s current statewide gas price average is $2.64. Hoosiers were paying $3.71 one year ago today.
Indiana Beach is open for the season. The amusement resort on the shores of Lake Shafer in Monticello has added a new water-themed area. Beach Bay features a new 25,000 square foot wave pool, racing slides, a bowl slide and luxurious cabanas.
The Breakers at Beach Bay will be the centerpiece attraction of the new water area. It is an 800,000-gallon wave pool that will offer hours of splashing fun for all ages. This new area is located adjacent to the park’s north entrance. Continue reading

Authorities confirm a body found Wednesday near Culver is that of a South Bend woman who disappeared last month. Alma Del Real, 22, was last seen around 3:30 a.m. on April 12th when a friend dropped her off at home after leaving Studio Rumba 305 in South Bend. The Marshall County Assessor’s office will be spending $173,000 to change assessment software.
Pam Davis from the Assessor’s office explained that the staff has been operating on outdated software. Customer support is also lacking which delays operations in the office.
The new state-certified program, XSoft, is designed for Indiana assessment procedures. It is also compatible with the auditor’s software.
Davis said the county would save approximately $8,200 in maintenance fees every year. It was noted that the staff immediately wanted the program after a short amount of time spent in a demonstration.
Fewer construction projects will be ongoing on Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says that with major federal holidays such as July 4th and Memorial Day, they cease work.
