Nine Arrests Made in Recent Enforcement Event
Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department recently completed a 25-day Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over event where 24 citations were issued along with nine arrests.
The department joined 220 other law enforcement agencies across the state in the campaign effort.
Marshall County Council Approves Pay Waiver
Marshall County Highway Administrator Laurie Baker requested the county council to waive the 10 percent pay reduction for a new employee.
New employees usually experience the reduction in pay during the 90-day probationary period, but Baker said the new employee is slipping into a similar position at the department with all of the skills necessary to do the work. The employee is coming to Marshall County from Starke County and Baker said he even took a pay cut to work in Marshall County. Continue reading
Police, Fire Department Receive Donation, Payment
Two monetary items were accepted for the Plymouth Fire Department and the Plymouth Police Department.
Fire Chief Rod Miller told the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety this week that the department received a check from Notre Dame for required medical services during practices in Culver. Miller said the check was in the amount of $3,080 and will be deposited in the gift fund.
Culver EMS to Hold Open House
The staff at the Culver-Union Township EMS invites residents to an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 24 to celebrate the recent upgrade in paramedic status and the purchase of a new ambulance.
EMS Director Kathy Hart told the Culver Town Council recently that the department reached paramedic status which allows many more options of emergency care.
Join Mayor Mark Senter’s Effort to Help Save Local Lives
Mayor of Plymouth Mark Senter will be hosting a blood drive today at the Plymouth Farmer’s Market from 8 a.m. until noon. All blood donated will remain within the community and could potentially save up to three local lives.

Distinguished Young Woman of Triton Pageant Provides Scholarships to Participating Senior Students

Last Saturday young ladies of Bourbon gathered to compete for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Triton. For more than 50 years a group of community members have utilized Triton schools to host the annual scholarship pageant, previously titled Jr. Miss.
Superintendent of Triton, Donna Burroughs, explained that even though the event is not school sponsored, it is still an opportunity to highlight a variety of different areas of accomplishment achieved by Triton High School seniors.
“It’s recognizing scholarship and self expression and physical fitness in women of the senior class who wanted to participate.” Burroughs said, “All the students who participate receive some kind of scholarship, depending on which category they may have placed first, they get larger scholarships.” Continue reading
Federal Indictment Handed Down against Peter Rink

A federal grand jury has indicted Peter Rink, also known as Peter Myers, on two counts.
Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman said Rink is facing a charge of possession of one or more firearms and affecting interstate commerce after previously being convicted of a felony, and possession of a Remington 870, 12-guage shotgun with a barrel of less than 18 inches.
Town of Bremen Looking to Take Care of “Junk” Vehicles
The Bremen Police Department is currently tagging disabled vehicles or “junk vehicles” in an effort to clean up the town.
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the Bremen Town Council will soon be updating the fees associated with ridding properties of these vehicles. Continue reading
Culver Town Council Approves Quote for Community Crossings Grant Projects
Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist presented quotes for town council approval this week on two of the three projects approved for Community Crossings grant funds.
Triton School Board Amends Bus Pick-Up and Drop-Off Policy
The Triton School Board addressed certain safety concerns with drop-off and pick-up procedures when they met earlier this week. Superintendent Donna Burroughs said the school corporation currently does not have a form that parents fill out to specify different pick-up and drop-off locations.
Burroughs reported that there are some families who are calling in frequently to instruct the schools of different places that their child needs to be dropped off at or picked up from on different days.
“It’s impossible to keep track of, especially if you have a substitute bus driver who may not know the kids to know that they aren’t going to their usual spot.” Burroughs explained, “Before we just went ‘well here’s their house that’s where they get picked up and dropped off’ but we’re past that in a lot of cases now with both parents working or divorce situations, et cetera.” Continue reading
New Appointment Approved for Plymouth Economic Development Commission
The Marshall County Council discussed approving a new appointment to the Plymouth Economic Development Commission.
Plymouth City Attorney Sean Surrisi explained that one of the three current members is nominated by the county council and their representative can no longer serve on the board.
Richter Road Water Main Extension Project Complete
The Richter Road water main extension project in Plymouth is done. Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson gave the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety an update on the project on Monday night.
“We have requested a substantial of completion letter. We are withholding retainer in the amount of $6,230.25 upon completion of their punchlist items which are fairly minor,” said Davidson.
Marshall County Highway Workers Continue Paving Operations
The Marshall County Highway Department is looking to complete more paving projects before the paving season ends soon.
Free Outdoor Movie Night at River Park Square
Looking for a family-friendly way to spend Friday the 13th? Come down to River Park Square for the Free Freaky Friday Family Outdoor Movie Night. The event will commence at 7:30 p.m. and the featured film will be the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus.
Since the event will be outdoors, patrons are encouraged dress accordingly and to bring their own blankets and chairs to use during the showing of the movie. The Marshall County Girls Softball Travel League will be running a concession stand on site. They’ll be selling hot chocolate, soda pop, hot dogs and popcorn for a dollar each. Continue reading
Marshall County Council Approves Amended Salary Ordinance
The Marshall County Council discussed a change in the probation item in the 2017 salary ordinance.
Auditor Julie Fox explained that the chief probation officer retired thus adjusting the rate of pay.
Culver Town Council Adopts 2018 Budget
The Culver Town Council approved readings on the ordinance adopting the 2018 budget for the Town of Culver.
The total budget listed on Indiana Gateway is $2,230,980. The General Fund is just over $1,840,000 while Motor Vehicle Highway is set at $59,000. The Park and Recreation budget is approximately $229,000.
Triton School Board Awards Staff for Receiving an “A” from the Indiana Department of Education
At the beginning of October, the Indiana Department of Education released their A through F school accountability grades. Triton Schools had been bumped up a letter grade from 2016, receiving an A this year.
In order to show their gratitude to the individuals responsible for the hard work that went into receiving the recognition, the Triton School Board voted to pay for gift cards to be given to everyone on the staff. Continue reading
Bremen Town Council Discussing Updating Codes and Ordinances
The Bremen Town Council is contemplating codifying ordinances to bring them to current standards.
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said they are overdue for updating.
“Our ordinance books and our code books are so far behind it’s not funny – we’re talking like 1980s and 1970s stuff that we’re trying to update and do some things with.”
No decisions were made during the council meeting Tuesday night. More discussions will be held at the next meeting on Monday, Oct. 23.
Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety Approves Resolution
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety considered a resolution on Monday night pertaining to the ability to write off delinquent and uncollectible water, wastewater, garbage, and stormwater bills.
Board member Jeff Houin made a comment that City Attorney Sean Surrisi handles several small claims issues in court and he is working to collect what is owed to the city. The write-offs amount to just over $1,800.
