The restoration of Plymouth’s REES Theater got a financial boost Friday. Hoosier Racing Tire announced a $50,000 contribution to the effort, according to a press release from project organizers. It matches a donation from the Plymouth Industrial Development Corporation (PIDCO) this past summer.

A fundraising event for the REES Theater is set for tonight (Thursday) from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the newly-renovated Brass Rail restaurant in downtown Plymouth.
Plymouth City Council Considers REES Theater Project Addition
The Plymouth City Council members considered a resolution Monday night to add the REES Theater project to the list of Plymouth Redevelopment Commission projects.
By adding the theater to the redevelopment commission’s list, a donation request of $575,000 over the course of two to four years to be funded out of TIF #1 could be financially researched by Umbaugh and Associates. The funding request would need to be approved by the redevelopment commission.
REES Project Committee to Offer Unique Auction Item
The REES Theater Project Committee members plan on offering a Marshall County Courthouse clock tower tour as part of a fundraiser set for this fall.
Committee member Donna Pontius asked the Marshall County Commissioners for permission this week to include a tour of the clock tower as part of an auction item slated for a REES Theater fundraising event on Friday, Oct. 5.
REES Theater Project Needing Donations for Grant
Officials with the REES Theater project are looking for funds to reach a matching grant of $300,000 from the Regional Cities initiative.
About $1.5 million needs to be raised by March 31 for this grant. The total amount hoping to be collected is just over $3.6 million.
The members hope to stay on track for a grand reopening in 2020, just in time for the 80th anniversary of the theater.
Plymouth Redevelopment Commission Gets Update on Rees Theater Project
Phase 1 of the Rees Theater project is complete. Randy Danielson gave the Plymouth Redevelopment Commission an update on the work done Tuesday night.
“In two weeks, we will reach our first anniversary of having the building moved over to a not-for-profit,” explained Danielson. “That first phase has allowed us to do the façade work, the masonry work that needed done, a dangerous masonry portion on LaPorte Street was taken care of as well, and the marquee was fixed and repaired so it is part of the community again.”
Phase One in Rees Theater Restoration Complete
Phase one in restoration efforts at the Rees Theater in downtown Plymouth is now complete.
Rees Project Committee Co-Chairman Randy Danielson said VANADCO workers finished installing LED lights on the marquee just in time for Christmas. The marquee was fully lit for Christmas and they will be on during New Year’s Eve. This was the last of the repairs to the masonry façade which included the rehabilitation of the playbill cases.
Work Continues on Rees Theater
More masonry work will be conducted on the Rees Theater this week.
On behalf of the Wythougan Preservation Council and the Rees Theater committee, Randy Danielson asked the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety last week if the company could place barricades on the sidewalks on E. LaPorte Street in order to effectively complete the work. A dumpster may also be placed on the parking spaces on E. LaPorte Street if needed.
Own a Piece of The Rees
In an effort to raise funds for the remaining renovations needed at the Rees Theater in downtown Plymouth, theater seats will be on sale at the Plymouth Farmers’ Market from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Rees Theater Project Gaining Ground
Exterior work on the Rees Theater has started, but more funding is needed before immediate repairs can be done before the winter season.
Brent Martin from the Wythougan Valley Preservation Council and architecture firm SRKM said the roof is bulging from the south side of the building. Immediate repair is also needed indoors as a portion of the ceiling collapsed on the auditorium floor. The repair is expected to cost around $120,000. While grant money won’t be available in time for this work to be complete before November, donations are being sought of any denomination. Community Update on Rees Theater Planned
Renovation plans have started at the Rees Theater in downtown Plymouth and the committee will have an update for the community this week.
The last committee meeting was held in April and some exterior work has taken place. The Rees Project Committee members are overwhelmed by the community’s continued support and interest in this project.
Rees Theater Project Committee to Create Business Plan
Exterior work to rehabilitate the Rees Theater in downtown Plymouth is underway. The masonry work is going as expected as part of Phase I of the restoration project.
Wythougan Valley Preservation Council member and Rees Project Committee member Randy Danielson said they are working to create a business plan with members in a sub-committee led by Jack Davis. Those volunteers will sift through suggestions made by members of the public for the use of the theater. Danielson said suggestions have submitted in writing, through social media, and interviews with performing arts groups in the county. Additional information will be gathered from the memory tour held in March and feedback from members of service clubs. Suggestions are always welcome.
Outdoor Project to Start Soon at the Rees Theater
Outside work at the Rees Theater in Plymouth will be starting soon.
The Wythougan Valley Preservation Council members presented a request to the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety this week asking to block off a few parking spaces on Michigan and LaPorte Streets for a portion of the work. While the board members approved that request, the preservation council members will need to present a similar request to the Indiana Department of Transportation as Michigan Street is considered a state highway.
Hundreds Visit Rees Theater
The popcorn was hot and the memories were flowing at the Rees Theater this weekend. The Wythougan Preservation Council opened the doors to the iconic downtown fixture in Plymouth so residents could see the “scene”ery before renovations are complete.
Curiosity seekers both young and old enjoyed touring the facility. Lifelong Plymouth resident Wilson Gerrard knew the Rees Theater before it was the Rees Theater. He said it was Dan Manns’ Print Shop with a grocery store next door along with an Optometrist in the back of the building. He said when the theater opened it was the place to be.

Restoration Rebate Program Application Presented to Plymouth City Council
The Plymouth City Council heard a proposal for a restoration rebate program application for work to be done on the Rees Theater.
Brent Martin from the Wythougan Valley Preservation Council said the council members have received proposals from C&S Masonry, Schoberg and Schoberg Painting and Vanadco Signs to do a wide range of exterior work to the building.
