The Plymouth City Council heard a proposal for a restoration rebate program application for work to be done on the Rees Theater.

Brent Martin from the Wythougan Valley Preservation Council said the council members have received proposals from C&S Masonry, Schoberg and Schoberg Painting and Vanadco Signs to do a wide range of exterior work to the building.

“The scope of that work is the restoration of the masonry tile façade on the west elevation and the removal and replacement of steel that has rusted and deteriorated. If you look at the façade closely, you’ll see the steel starting to push the masonry out on both the west and south façade. It also includes painting and the restoration of windows. The playbills will also be restored. In general, the marquee that was replaced in 1997 is in great shape.”

Martin said this work is pivotal for what is planned.

“Getting the exterior of the building in good condition so that it’s secure so it won’t deteriorate is key toward the eventual big project, which is the restoration of the inside and doing all of the work that is necessary to make it both code compliant and an asset to the city.”

With the council’s approval, Martin anticipates work to begin almost immediately. The contractor working on the masonry portion of the project will request blocking a portion of the sidewalk in order to properly do the necessary work.

The cost of the proposal is $34,771. The rebate of that amount is 20 percent, or $6,954.20. The council unanimously approved the request as presented.
