South Bend Man Arrested in Theft, Pursuit Incident

A South Bend man was taken into custody early Monday morning after allegedly stealing items from a Plymouth business and fleeing.

A Walmart representative notified police of a theft from the store. Police say the suspect, later identified as 40-year-old Sulton Williams, pushed a cart full of unpaid items out of the store and into an awaiting vehicle with a male driver. Williams reportedly put a computer, DVD player and some cat food into the white Ford Fusion, but left behind other items and fled in the vehicle.

Missing Elderly Man Returned Safely to Family Members

A two-car accident in Marshall County Thursday morning helped reunite a missing elderly man with his family.

Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene on U.S. 6 and Michigan Street in Lapaz at about 5:31 a.m. Police say that 21-year-old Austin Mahoney was traveling west on U.S. 6 when he approached a stopped vehicle partially parked in the roadway. As Mahoney attempted to go by the vehicle, the driver, an elderly man from Michigan, opened his driver’s door quickly. According to the report, Mahoney could not stop in time and hit the door with his vehicle.

Georgetown Man Arrested after Alleged Battery Incident

Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about an alleged battery and possible robbery incident early Tuesday morning at the Jellystone Campground in Plymouth.

According to police, the victim, who sustained substantial facial injuries in the reported incident, identified the suspect as Nicholas Terrell Tharp, 29, of Georgetown, Indiana. Tharp was located within the campground. After an investigation, Tharp was booked into the Marshall County Jail on a preliminary charge of battery with moderate bodily injuries

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department to Host Youth Camp

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel invites area youth to attend the 2017 Law Enforcement Camp on Friday, June 23 through Sunday, June 25.

Counselors from law enforcement agencies throughout the county will host a variety of activities for the area’s children to experience. Camp activities include law enforcement displays, career-oriented classes, leadership skills, obstacle courses, firearms training, and other activities during the three-day event at Potowatomi Wildlife Park in Tippecanoe.You can also click here now to know more.

Deputy and Camp Counselor Travis O’Neal from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department said the Elkhart City Police Department’s Bomb Squad will host a demonstration.

“The campers will get to see all of the equipment they’re using and they will set of some explosives,” said O’Neal.

Deputy and Camp Counselor Ryan Hollopeter added the officers will teach campers integrity, discipline and respect when attending this camp.

“All of that comes together at the academy,” said Hollopeter. “As chiefs and sheriffs hire new deputies, that’s what they look for. We work that into this camp. It’s not like a boot camp, but they are going to be exposed to that organization and held accountable.”

Sheriff Hassel invites adults to attend just to get in on all of the fun.

There is no fee to attend the camp. Food for the event is being donated and the hands to prepare it will come from volunteers. There is an insurance cost for the camp and any donations toward that fee can be made by contacting Sheriff Hassel at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

La Porte Man Charged with Drug Possession

A La Porte man was arrested in Marshall County late Tuesday night after police allegedly found him in possession of narcotics.

An officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department conducted a traffic stop on U.S. 31 near the intersection of 16th Road. The officer reportedly found that the driver, John Sims, Jr. was impaired and in possession of numerous illegal drugs.

Mishawaka Man Arrested for Reckless Homicide

A Mishawaka man was arrested in Marshall County on Saturday night after a death investigation.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department received a call about a deceased man inside a home on Del-lo-me Lane in Plymouth. Jonathon McNeely of Indianapolis was identified as the man found dead and police say he died from a drug overdose.

Two Arrested after Pursuit in Marshall County

Two people were arrested in the early morning hours on Sunday after a vehicle pursuit.

The pursuit began when a Bourbon police officer found a vehicle traveling 70 mph in a 55 mph zone at Lincoln Highway and Gumwood Roads. The pursuit continued for several miles through Marshall County at speeds well over 100 mph, according to the incident report. Officers from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and Plymouth Police Department joined the chase. According to police, the pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle ran off the road and collided with a tree on Queen Road near U.S. 30 in Plymouth. The suspects were taken into custody.

One Injured in a Vehicle/Bicycle Accident

One person was injured after a vehicle/bicycle collision in Marshall County.

According to an investigation by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, 63-year-old Richard D. Murray, of Plymouth, was traveling west on Lincoln Highway east of Redwood Road on Monday evening when he struck Pamela Mahler-Lee, 50, of Plymouth, on a bicycle. She was transported to the Plymouth hospital after receiving minor injuries in the accident.

New Vehicles Coming to Marshall County Sheriff’s Department

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will be getting four new squad cars this year.

The sheriff’s department is trading in four multi-purpose vehicles used as spare patrol vehicles or transport vehicles as well as reserve unit vehicles. Three out of the four are Crown Victoria patrol cars.

Two vehicles date back to 2009 with the oldest trade-in vehicle being a 2006 Ford Taurus. One 2011 model is also being replaced.
