Motorists Beware! Current Weather Conditions Ideal for Pothole Formation

As the weather continues to fluctuate between warm and cold, it unfortunately causes ideal conditions for pothole formation.

Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters explained why these damp, dynamic conditions can result in these unwanted road hazards.

Peters said, “Water gets underneath the road which freezes, then when it thaws it kind of somewhat creates a soft spot under the road so with a soft spot being underneath the roadway that starts to give, it cracks and breaks then it just start creating a bigger and bigger and bigger pothole.” Continue reading

Marshall County Engineer/Director Position Still Open

The Marshall County Commissioners are still looking to fill the county’s engineer/director position at the county highway department. Commission President Kevin Overmyer said no resumes had been received as of Tuesday morning.

Commissioner Mike Delp said Highway Supervisor Jason Peters has made an offer to hire a clerk at the highway department. Delp added that since things are in a transition phase at the moment, others should be involved when hiring a parts manager.

Marshall County Council Discusses Highway Department Request

Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters and Commissioner Kurt Garner went before the county council Monday morning to request funds to complete funding for three Community Crossings grant projects.

Three projects were approved for funding, but with the way the bidding numbers came in only two projects could be fully funded. The highway department is seeking funding for a third project to be funded solely by the county council. Continue reading

Two Roads Closed Wednesday for Fog Seal Operation

Two Marshall County roads will be closed today so county highway crews can perform fog sealing operations.

Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters told the county commissioners on Monday that Overmyer Drive and Pioneer Drive recently underwent chip and seal road work and now the final fog seal will be applied that will help extend the condition of the road. Striping of the road will occur next week.

The roads will reopen as soon as the fog seal coating is dried. Peters suggested that it would take roughly two hours to properly seal.

Road Work Planned Today, Watch for Closures

Plymouth-Goshen Trail in Marshall County will be closed as crews work to crack seal the road. Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters said the work will be done from city limits to U.S. 30 over the next couple of days. The road is being prepared for chip and seal work.

Peters said the chip and seal work will be done on several county roads and will take approximately one month to complete. He urges motorists to drive carefully on these roads with the new surface. Reduce your speed and drive with care so the loose road surface doesn’t cause damage to vehicles.

Marshall County Highway Department Working on Paving Schedule

Work should be done to reclaim roads by the end of this week. Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters told the commissioners that he anticipates work on 7th Road should be complete this week after repairs are made to some equipment.

The highway workers plan to pave Lilac Road as it’s next on the list. Peters hopes to use the new paving machine on Beech Road when it arrives later this month.
