Marshall County Building Inspector Chuck Dewitt altered County Commissioners of a policy change that will directly impact his department’s permitting process.

Emergency Management Agency Director Seeks Request Approval from Marshall County Commissioners

The Marshall County Commissioners considered a number of requests submitted by Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery when they met Monday morning.

Director Avery told the Commissioners that the Blueberry Festival security requested to use the Emergency Operations Center from August 30th through September 3rd. He explained, “They’ve used it in the past, they’ve been provided access to the building and to that room specifically so they can use the equipment.”

Next, Avery sought permission to attend two events that have no cost associated with them. Continue reading

Marshall County Attorney Creates Ordinance Establishing an Electronic Data Fee for the Sheriff’s Department

At the request of Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel, County Attorney Jim Clevenger created an ordinance establishing a fee for electronic data. The County Commissioners looked over the ordinance when they met Monday morning.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department has ordinances and fees for other public records requests for paper copies of things such as accident reports, gun permits and background checks but there was no fee set for digital copies. Continue reading

DLGF Reaches Final Determination about Tax Increase for Cumulative Bridge Fund

The Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) reached a final determination about the proposed tax increase that would help reestablish the Marshall County Cumulative Bridge Fund. In a document provided to the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning, DLGF officials stated that after weighing the available testimony and evidence they found no legal basis for denying the proposed fund reestablishment.

Commissioners initially approved the increase back in March. However, after at least ten residents signed a petition objecting to it, DLGF representatives held a public hearing and looked over all relevant information to assess the apparent necessity. Continue reading

Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today

The Marshall County Commissioners will meet today.

The commissioners will discuss the position of interim superintendent. They previously discussed placing Highway Supervisor Jason Peters into that position as a county engineer has not yet been selected. A pay upgrade would be involved with that position.

Old U.S. 31 Won’t be Renamed

Old U.S. 31 south of U.S. 6 will not be renamed.

The issue came up during last week’s Marshall County Commissioners meeting. Commissioner Kurt Garner commented that a homeowner on that stretch of road thought of renaming it State Road 931 rather than Michigan Road. Garner said the resident thought that it might entice people to drive on the road knowing that it’s a state road and provide more traffic.

Replacement for Marshall County Plan Director Found

An offer of employment has been extended to Ty Adley, who is scheduled to take over for Marshall County Plan Director Ralph Booker once he retires.

At last Monday’s Marshall County Commissioners’ meeting, Commissioner Mike Delp noted that as long as Adley passes the background check and the preliminary steps involved in the hiring process, he will officially replace Booker on July 1st. Continue reading

Commissioners Receive Update About Marshall County Council on Aging

Marshall County Commissioners recently heard a presentation from Jackie Wright with the Marshall County Council on Aging.

Wright came before the commissioners previously to obtain permission to apply for public transit funds from INDOT. At that time, she was asked to gather some more specific details and come back to another meeting.

Commissioner Kevin Overmyer noted that one reason she was asked to return is because the County will soon be preparing their budget and since an $8,000 donation is provided to the Council on Aging annually, he just wanted the commissioners to hear a bit of an update organization’s operations. Marshall County Commissioners Approve Bridge Inspection Contract with INDOT

Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters presented County Commissioners with a bridge inspection contract when they met Monday night.

Peters first stated that an agreement between the county and USI Consultants, the company that will be performing the inspections, has already been made and he noted that contract was approved during a past meeting.

He explained the contract presented this week is between the county and the Indiana Department of Transportation. Continue reading

Marshall County Commissioners Address Accidental Mowing on Pretty Lake Trail

The unintentional mowing of a man’s plants that are placed in the County’s right-of-way sparked a discussion during the Marshall County Commissioners’ meeting Monday evening.

Commissioner Mike Delp began by recognizing that the plants were mowed accidentally and explained that the mowing crews did not realize they were placed there intentionally.

Marc Eads, a resident of Pretty Lake Trail in Plymouth, went on to discuss the strategic placement of the plants. He said they are a part of what is called a “bioswale” which assists with drainage. Continue reading
