Policy Guidance for Graduation Pathways Unanimously Approved by State Board of Education

In order to provide some clarification about the Graduation Pathways Policy that was passed by the State Board of Education in December of 2017, a policy guidance document was approved last week.

The policy guidance approval apparently follows six months of outreach that included meetings with educator and administrators, state agencies and officials, members of the business community, national education and workforce organizations and higher education leaders. Continue reading

Argos School Board Permits Out-of-District Students to Enroll, Establishes Transfer Deadline

In the state of Indiana, school corporations are required to submit a notice to the Department of Education if they plan to accept out-of-district students.

Argos Superintendent Ned Speicher reported that when school board members met Monday night, they voted to allow out-of-district students and established that transfer requests can be submitted anytime between June 1st and September 1st. Continue reading

Bremen Public Schools to Work with Boys and Girls Club to Expand Summer School Program Thanks to IDOE Grant

Officials at Bremen Public Schools will be collaborating with the local Boys and Girls Club to provide more summer school services after the school was recently awarded a grant through the Indiana Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers program.

According to school board president Brian Teall, the school was awarded $120,000 for the next four years, meaning that they’ll receive a total of $480,000.

Bremen Schools will have a contract with the Boys and Girls Club in order to expand the summer school program to give students an opportunity to get caught up before the start of the school year. Continue reading

Triton School Corporation Recognized as IDOE Digital Learning Grant Recipient

The Triton School Corporation was recently recognized as one of the recipients of the 2018 Digital Learning Grants offered through the Indiana Department of Education’s Office of eLearning.

IDOE said the grants were offered for districts developing a new focus for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics instruction or computer science within their digital learning environment.

Triton Schools involve technology in many aspects of instruction for students of all ages, ranging from interactive lessons on iPads at the elementary school level all the way to hands-on STEM curriculum in their Project Lead the Way Classes at the high school. Continue reading

John Glenn School Corporation Named Four Star School

The John Glenn School Corporation was recently named a Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education.

In order to be considered a Four Star School, a school must have received an “A” grade on the state’s A-F accountability system for the 2016-2017 school year, tested 95 percent of students on the ISTEP English/Language Arts and Math tests, and the combined pass percentage of both tests in grades tested must be in the top 25 percentile.

Bremen Public Schools Receive Funds to Invest in Community Learning Centers

The Bremen Public School Corporation was recently awarded $120,000 through the Indiana Department of Education’s 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program.

The federally-funded program provides at-risk students a safe environment during non-school hours. This program includes multiple centers and sites which can be located in schools, community facilities, or faith-based facilities.

All centers much provide a range of high-quality services to support regular school-day academics and development. Continue reading

Help Combat Childhood Hunger By Sponsoring a Food Service Program This Summer

The Indiana Department of Education is seeking participants for the 2018 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Rural areas such as Starke, Marshall and Pulaski Counties, are especially in need of services to help combat childhood hunger.

This program provides funding assistance to meal service sites in low-income areas where children may lack access to good nutrition during the summer months. Continue reading

Those thinking about becoming a teacher are now getting some extra encouragement from the Indiana Department of Education. This week, the department announced the launch of a teacher recruitment and retention campaign. At the heart of that are two new websites designed “to promote positive educational resources and interactions,” according to department officials.

New Graduation Pathways Approved by Indiana State Board of Education This Week

On Wednesday, the Indiana State Board of Education(SBOE) approved several new graduation pathways for Hoosier high school students beginning with the 2019 freshman class.

Though these changes have been a topic of contention lately, the Board states that they were designed to give all students the skills and experiences they will need to take the next step in their educational journeys and to secure good jobs. Continue reading

Culver Community Schools See Enrollment Growth

Culver Community School Board members received a brief enrollment report from Superintendent Karen Shuman when they met Monday night.

According to the Indiana Department of Education enrollment report, Culver Community Schools had a total enrollment of 840 students in 2016. Shuman shared that after comparing this year’s number to last year’s, she found the school corporation has nine more students in general. Continue reading

Triton School Board Awards Staff for Receiving an “A” from the Indiana Department of Education

At the beginning of October, the Indiana Department of Education released their A through F school accountability grades. Triton Schools had been bumped up a letter grade from 2016, receiving an A this year.

In order to show their gratitude to the individuals responsible for the hard work that went into receiving the recognition, the Triton School Board voted to pay for gift cards to be given to everyone on the staff. Continue reading
