Trail Events Statewide During National Trails Day

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is encouraging hiking, riding, and other activities next weekend.

Saturday June 6th is National Trails Day and the DNR is celebrating by offering clean-ups, hikes, and other events at several state parks. The state is largely using the event to open several trails at a park in Indianapolis, but events are still being offered around Indiana.

Motorist and Motorcycle Rider Injured in U.S. 31 Crash

A Rochester woman and an Argos man were injured in a three-vehicle Friday morning crash on U.S. 31 at Michigan Road. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 11:45 a.m., according to a news release. A PT Cruiser driven by Sierra Winters, 26, of Argos, was northbound in the right lane of U.S. 31 near 12B Road and crossed over the left passing lane in front of a motorcycle driven by Brody Townsend, 21, of Rochester. Townsend’s Harley-Davidson struck the back of Winters’ car. The crash report indicates he was thrown from the bike and came to rest just north of the intersection. Continue reading

Town Prepares for Taste of Culver

Culver is preparing for an annual festival that brings food and music to the downtown.

Organizers of “Taste of Culver” – sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in Culver – requested approval of several items by the Town Council on Tuesday night. The event closes Jefferson Street one day each June to allow vendors to set-up tents.

Funeral services for 66-year-old Terry Walker of Walkerton are Monday, June 1st at 11:00 a.m. EDT at Rannells Funeral Home at the Koontz Lake Chapel. Visitation is Sunday, May 31st from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society for Terry Walker.

Culver Turns to Water Project Funding

Bids have been awarded, but now the Town of Culver is focusing on just how to fund upgrades to their water treatment facility.

The Culver Town Council has set a special meeting for June 2nd to adopt an ordinance allowing bonds to be issued to fund the $1.7-million. A separate ordinance specifying new rates for water consumption will also be introduced at the June 2nd meeting. The water rate ordinance will likely be adopted in mid-June.

American Red Cross May Close Marshall County Office

The American Red Cross office in Plymouth is slated to close on June 30. Northern Indiana Regional Executive Director Sue Gulley says services and programs will still be offered. She adds shutting the office down will allow the nonprofit organization to combine valuable resources while still providing programs like CPR training(refer AHA BLS CPR Classes by Intouch CPR ), disaster response and blood drives. Marshall County Red Cross volunteer Carol Arnett works closely with emergency management and other local officials when disasters like gas leaks, fires and floods occur. She says local volunteers can respond within minutes versus the hours it takes for South Bend to mobilize.

Riverside Intermediate School Extends Doghouse Bid Deadline

Officials at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth have extended bids on a state-of-the-art doghouse built as a class project for another week. Fifth grade students and their teachers built the canine palace with grant funds as part of a mentoring project. They decided to auction it off and donate proceeds to the Marshall County Humane Society. The sale was supposed to end last Friday, but a last-minute bid of $350 from a Mishawaka family and a flurry of phone calls prompted them to set a new deadline. Continue reading
