The Town of Culver continues the search for a new EMS Director.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is encouraging hiking, riding, and other activities next weekend.
Saturday June 6th is National Trails Day and the DNR is celebrating by offering clean-ups, hikes, and other events at several state parks. The state is largely using the event to open several trails at a park in Indianapolis, but events are still being offered around Indiana.
A Rochester woman and an Argos man were injured in a three-vehicle Friday morning crash on U.S. 31 at Michigan Road. The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 11:45 a.m., according to a news release. A PT Cruiser driven by Sierra Winters, 26, of Argos, was northbound in the right lane of U.S. 31 near 12B Road and crossed over the left passing lane in front of a motorcycle driven by Brody Townsend, 21, of Rochester. Townsend’s Harley-Davidson struck the back of Winters’ car. The crash report indicates he was thrown from the bike and came to rest just north of the intersection. Continue reading

Marshall County is accepting nominations for an honor that comes around once every 200 years.
A committee has been formed to help organize events surrounding the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay. The event won’t take place until 2016, but volunteers must be found to carry the torch through all 92 counties.

Culver is preparing for an annual festival that brings food and music to the downtown.
Organizers of “Taste of Culver” – sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in Culver – requested approval of several items by the Town Council on Tuesday night. The event closes Jefferson Street one day each June to allow vendors to set-up tents.

Funeral services for 66-year-old Terry Walker of Walkerton are Monday, June 1st at 11:00 a.m. EDT at Rannells Funeral Home at the Koontz Lake Chapel. Visitation is Sunday, May 31st from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society for Terry Walker.
The winning streak continues for the Plymouth High School band. School officials were notified the band is once again a recipient of the prestigious “All-Music Award” from the Indiana State School Music Association. Bids have been awarded, but now the Town of Culver is focusing on just how to fund upgrades to their water treatment facility.
The Culver Town Council has set a special meeting for June 2nd to adopt an ordinance allowing bonds to be issued to fund the $1.7-million. A separate ordinance specifying new rates for water consumption will also be introduced at the June 2nd meeting. The water rate ordinance will likely be adopted in mid-June.

The American Red Cross office in Plymouth is slated to close on June 30. Northern Indiana Regional Executive Director Sue Gulley says services and programs will still be offered. She adds shutting the office down will allow the nonprofit organization to combine valuable resources while still providing programs like CPR training(refer AHA BLS CPR Classes by Intouch CPR ), disaster response and blood drives. Marshall County Red Cross volunteer Carol Arnett works closely with emergency management and other local officials when disasters like gas leaks, fires and floods occur. She says local volunteers can respond within minutes versus the hours it takes for South Bend to mobilize.

The Culver Town Council is working its way through new guidelines for the annexation of property.
Culver is currently considering annexing land to its Northwest to increase the Town’s assessed valuation and potentially offer the land up for development. Surveys have been sent to the landowners affected by any future decisions. 22 have been returned.

The Plymouth Board of Works awarded the bid for mill and fill work to the contractor with the lowest bid for the project. Bristol-based Niblock will do the work for slightly more than $488,000. An area not-for-profit will soon begin construction on another home.
Habitat for Humanity of Marshall County says it is ready to break ground on its 17th family home. The group dedicates itself to ensuring every person has what they consider a decent place to live.
Officials at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth have extended bids on a state-of-the-art doghouse built as a class project for another week. Fifth grade students and their teachers built the canine palace with grant funds as part of a mentoring project. They decided to auction it off and donate proceeds to the Marshall County Humane Society. The sale was supposed to end last Friday, but a last-minute bid of $350 from a Mishawaka family and a flurry of phone calls prompted them to set a new deadline. Continue reading

Projects included in the bid specifications include work at the south entrance to Centennial Park and on the two short streets to the cemetery. The city received five bids for the work, ranging from a low of $488,000 to a high of more than $696,000. Continue reading
The man believed responsible for the disappearance and death of a South Bend woman whose body was found near Culver on Wednesday has been formally charged with murder. Investigators say Alberto Cruz, 24, has been a suspect in the disappearance of Alma Del Real, 22, since she was first reported missing last month. Continue reading
