Culver is preparing for an annual festival that brings food and music to the downtown.

Organizers of “Taste of Culver” – sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in Culver – requested approval of several items by the Town Council on Tuesday night. The event closes Jefferson Street one day each June to allow vendors to set-up tents.

Funeral services for 66-year-old Terry Walker of Walkerton are Monday, June 1st at 11:00 a.m. EDT at Rannells Funeral Home at the Koontz Lake Chapel. Visitation is Sunday, May 31st from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society for Terry Walker.

Culver Turns to Water Project Funding

Bids have been awarded, but now the Town of Culver is focusing on just how to fund upgrades to their water treatment facility.

The Culver Town Council has set a special meeting for June 2nd to adopt an ordinance allowing bonds to be issued to fund the $1.7-million. A separate ordinance specifying new rates for water consumption will also be introduced at the June 2nd meeting. The water rate ordinance will likely be adopted in mid-June.

American Red Cross May Close Marshall County Office

The American Red Cross office in Plymouth is slated to close on June 30. Northern Indiana Regional Executive Director Sue Gulley says services and programs will still be offered. She adds shutting the office down will allow the nonprofit organization to combine valuable resources while still providing programs like CPR training(refer AHA BLS CPR Classes by Intouch CPR ), disaster response and blood drives. Marshall County Red Cross volunteer Carol Arnett works closely with emergency management and other local officials when disasters like gas leaks, fires and floods occur. She says local volunteers can respond within minutes versus the hours it takes for South Bend to mobilize.

Riverside Intermediate School Extends Doghouse Bid Deadline

Officials at Riverside Intermediate School in Plymouth have extended bids on a state-of-the-art doghouse built as a class project for another week. Fifth grade students and their teachers built the canine palace with grant funds as part of a mentoring project. They decided to auction it off and donate proceeds to the Marshall County Humane Society. The sale was supposed to end last Friday, but a last-minute bid of $350 from a Mishawaka family and a flurry of phone calls prompted them to set a new deadline. Continue reading

County Officials Honor Retiring Merit Board Members

Two retiring merit board officers were honored this week for their dedicated years of service to Marshall County.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Captain Dan Butts presented plaques to Dr. Jim Bottorff and Orion “Bud” Treat who served on the Marshall County Merit Board for 44 years apiece. The recognition ceremony was held during the Marshall County Commissioners meeting on Monday.

AAA Encourages Safe Travel This Memorial Day Weekend

Officials with the AAA Hoosier Motor Club predicts a busy travel holiday this Memorial Day weekend. They predict Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the travel period which is defined as Thursday, May 21 to Monday, May 25.

Most drivers will likely pay the lowest Memorial Day gas prices in at least five years.

According to AAA, today’s national average price is $2.66 which is $1.01 less than last year. AAA predicts most U.S. travelers will pay the cheapest Memorial Day gas prices in at least five years. Indiana’s current statewide gas price average is $2.64. Hoosiers were paying $3.71 one year ago today.

Indiana Beach Adds New Attractions

Indiana Beach is open for the season. The amusement resort on the shores of Lake Shafer in Monticello has added a new water-themed area. Beach Bay features a new 25,000 square foot wave pool, racing slides, a bowl slide and luxurious cabanas.

The Breakers at Beach Bay will be the centerpiece attraction of the new water area. It is an 800,000-gallon wave pool that will offer hours of splashing fun for all ages. This new area is located adjacent to the park’s north entrance. Continue reading
