After weighing public opinions that range from benefits to the community to safety and security concerns, the Shady Rest Home Committee Thursday afternoon approved a recommendation to the commissioners with a majority vote.
During Wednesday night’s Shady Rest Committee public hearing, some background information was provided about the proposed program “David’s Courage” that Ted Hayden and Gregg Erickson are seeking to implement at the county-owned building.
County Commissioner and Shady Rest Committee member Kurt Garner stated that initially, the committee received four proposals and they requested that Hayden and Erickson combine their plans since they had similar ideas.
Hayden presented the goal of the organization, “Our mission is to have a lasting change on the spiritual, emotional, physical and financial health of those who are struggling with addiction. We will provide a therapeutic community where a safe, consistent and caring environment creates an atmosphere that is conducive to change.” Continue reading
Last night’s Shady Rest Committee public hearing was emotionally charged with various members of the community coming out to show support, ask questions and express concerns over Ted Hayden and Gregg Erickson’s proposal to utilize the county building for an addiction recovery facility.
Those speaking in favor of the “David’s Courage” program taking occupancy of the Shady Rest Home included County Health officials, recovered addicts and family members personally impacted by addiction, as well as people who wanted to see the historic structure utilized to help the community. The Marshall County Commissioners considered two ordinances on second and third reading when they met Monday morning.
Planning Director Ralph Booker presented an ordinance amendment approved and recommended by the Marshall County Planning Commission that changes the side yard fence height to “six feet in height and must be of uniform, color and style construction materials.” The ordinance amendment pertains to L-1, T-1, C-1, C-2, and industrial districts. Agricultural districts are excluded.
The members of the Wythougan Valley Preservation Council, Inc. held its annual meeting on Thursday afternoon in the Marshall County Museum.
As part of the business portion of the meeting, the current office holders were voted to retain their positions. Kurt Garner serves as President with Vice President Scott Schuster, Treasurer Paul Schoberg and Secretary Portia Wampler.
Three Daniel McDonald awards were given. President Kurt Garner gave the history of the award.
The committee overseeing the potential future operations of the Shady Rest Home met Tuesday afternoon to review four proposals that were submitted to offer services out of the county home.
The committee had proposals from Save the Old Properties, or S.T.O.P., Prairie View Adult Services, Gregg Erickson, and Glenn Peterson. The four offered services ranging from an intergenerational community, wellness and addiction recovery services.
The Shady Rest Home Advisory Committee is asking for soft proposals from parties interested in long-term use and occupancy of the Marshall County property formerly known as “Shady Rest”. Soft proposals should not exceed three pages and should indicate use, ownership structure, one’s ability to sustain operations and maintenance, and approximate number of individuals who would benefit from services provided.
