Students Making Up for Snow Days Today

CalendarStudents at a couple of area corporations are in class today to make up for days missed due to weather. This was an optional day for both Culver Community and North Judson-San Pierre Schools based on the calendars adopted for the 2015-16 school year. Both ended up using today as a make-up due to inclement weather.

Culver School Board Preparing for 2015-16

The Culver Schools Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for tonight at 7:00 [EST] will take place in the administrative office located at 700 School Street. The 2015/16 handbooks for the elementary, middle and highschools for the are in need of approval. An update about the title 1 grant is set to be discussed during tonight’s meeting as well as 2015/16 breakfast and lunch prices. Contract pay date clarifications for both the 2014/15 and 2015/16 school years is another one of the action items the board will cover during the meeting this evening.

Culver Schedules Snow Make-Up Day

Students in the Culver Community School Corporation will be in class this Friday, Feb. 6, weather permitting. Superintendent Vicki McGuire says it’s a make-up day for Monday, Feb. 2 when school was canceled due to snow. Local Schools on Soft Lockdown

Eastern Pulaski Schools and the Culver Community School Corporation are under a soft lockdown.

Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dan Foster told Max 98.3 News that an individual in the community had threatened to harm himself. Foster said that the school is simply taking a precaution where all of the doors have been locked at all of the buildings. Students will not be leaving the buildings for recess or any student aid projects.

It was a general threat and not a specific threat to the school or any students or staff at the school, according to Foster. Foster stated that it was a safety precaution.

Teacher Performance Grants Awarded to Several Local Schools

news-3Educators at several local schools will receive a share of the $30 million in Teacher Performance Grants awarded by the state to more than 1,300 schools. Funds were given to schools with students earning ISTEP+ or end of course assessment passing scores of 72.5 percent or above or with a growth in graduation rates of 5 percent ore more from the previous year. Teachers who are rated effective or highly effective under Indiana’s teacher evaluation system for the 2013-2014 academic year will be paid based on student performance. Continue reading

Vocational Program’s Fate Hinges on Balanced Calendar Adoption

CalendarAt least one of the popular trade programs offered through the North Central Vocational Educational Cooperative could be in jeopardy as participating corporations weigh the pros and cons of a balanced school calendar. Kyle Elliott is instructor for the building trades program based at Culver Community High School. He says students from Knox and North Judson-San Pierre are also enrolled in the program. Balanced Calendar Public Forum Set for Culver Community Schools

Culver Community Schools will host a public forum on Nov. 3rd at 6 p.m. ET to discuss the pros and cons of a balanced calendar. Rochester School Corporation Superintendent Janna Vance, plus a principal and a teacher from the school will be at the Culver High School auditorium to talk about the balanced schedule.

The board will then meet afterward to decide whether or not to switch to balanced calendar.

A balanced calendar still provides the state-mandated 180 days of classroom instruction. School would start about a week or a week-and-a-half earlier than it does now and end at the beginning of June. The schedule would also feature two-week breaks for remediation and vacation in the fall and spring.
