Bremen Town Council Considers Funding Request

The Bremen Town Council members are considering a request from the Marshall County Council on Aging to help fund transportation needs.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said residents from the town request transportation services from the organization each year. He said about 400 trips are made to assist residents in Bremen each year. Overall, the organization fulfills over 25,000 trip requests annually.

Public Hearing Held on Bremen Downtown Renovation Project

The Bremen Town Council members held a public hearing Monday night concerning the town’s plan to apply for a grant for the downtown renovation project.

The town is going to apply for a $40,000 planning grant which will be matched by the town in the amount of $4,500. A $1.5 million grant through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs is also in the works. The town’s match for that project is $500,000. Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said a lot is planned for this project that will begin in a couple of years.

Bremen Flood Clean-up Ongoing

The Town of Bremen is still working to clean up after flood waters wreaked havoc in the area last week.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the wastewater treatment facility was under close watch as two to three feet of water surrounded the plant.

“It remained operational all the way through, but we were really close in getting water into our electrical components which would have been a really big mess,” explained Weldy. “The town guys worked around the clock. We had three fire trucks and eight hoses to pump water out of there in order to keep the facility above water to function correctly.”

Long-Time Bremen Redevelopment Commission Member Resigns

A long-time member of the Bremen Redevelopment Commission resigned his seat.

David Holmes, who held the president’s position, is resigning in order to represent Southwire in the company’s expansion project. Holmes was also the Bremen Town Council Attorney for several decades. Attorney Anthony Wagner has since assumed that duty.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said there are several candidates being considered for Holmes’ replacement on the redevelopment commission and a decision will be made in the next few weeks.

Three Bremen Businesses Plan Expansion Projects

Three businesses in Bremen are anticipating expansion projects. That’s according to Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy.

“I’ve been talking to them about some tax abatements and different things that we can do with the town of Bremen,” said Weldy. “One of the major expansion projects is Southwire. They purchased a 30 acre parcel just north of the Town of Bremen that’s going to connect to their existing building they have out there. We’ll have to annex that into the city. We’ll have to get it rezoned. They want to start breaking ground early this summer. Bremtown Kitchens also wants to expand and Omega Wire plans to expand this year in the town of Bremen. That’s a good thing.”

New Townhouses to be Built in Bremen

Eighteen new townhouses will be constructed in the town of Bremen.

According to Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy, a construction company purchased some property on South Jackson Street for this aggressive project. All 18 structures will be built this year. Two are already complete. Weldy noted that the townhouses will cost around $180,000 apiece when ready for new homeowners.
