Public Hearing Held on Bremen Downtown Renovation Project

The Bremen Town Council members held a public hearing Monday night concerning the town’s plan to apply for a grant for the downtown renovation project.

The town is going to apply for a $40,000 planning grant which will be matched by the town in the amount of $4,500. A $1.5 million grant through the Office of Community and Rural Affairs is also in the works. The town’s match for that project is $500,000. Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said a lot is planned for this project that will begin in a couple of years.

“INDOT is going to provide $1.2 or $1.3 million to take 106 that runs right through our downtown and they’re going to take it from Montgomery Street to Washington Street and lower the surface about eight to 10 inches,” said Weldy. “Over the years they’ve come in and taken an inch-and-a-half off and put two inches on and right now we have no curb left downtown. In the meantime, the town is going to take on the responsibility of replacing all of the street lights and replacing all of the sidewalks and curbs downtown.”

No public comment was given during the hearing.

The Bremen Town Council members signed the necessary paperwork to move forward with the process.
