Plymouth BZA Calls Special Meeting for Mooney’s Issue

Amid an ongoing discussion over an improperly placed sign, some additional discussion may soon take place.

Mooney’s Ice Cream Parlor, located in the 300 block of East Jefferson Street, was assessed a $150 fine for failing to receive a permit prior to constructing their sign and then failing to remove the sign when instructed to do so by the Plymouth Board of Zoning Appeals. Culver In Talks With Firms for Affordable Housing

The Town of Culver continues to work toward the development of affordable housing.

The effort is being led by the Town’s Affordable Housing Committee, but is also reported to the Culver Redevelopment Commission. During the CRC’s meeting on Monday evening, it was learned that several construction and development companies have met with the town to consider the option.

Marshall County Commissioners to Receive Road Update

The Marshall County Commissioners will have an update on roads when they discuss items with Highway Administrator Laurie Baker and Supervisor of County Highways Jason Peters.

The highway department crews are doing what they can to rehabilitate areas that were damaged due to the frost line. Potholes have surfaced, and edges of roads have deteriorated as winter turned to spring. It has been noted that some summer road projects will suffer due to lack of funding. The highway crews will do what they can with the funding they have to make the road as passable as possible.

Low Absentee Vote Count in City of Plymouth Primary Municipal Election

The Marshall County Clerk’s Office has counted 13 absentee ballots so far in the City of Plymouth Primary Municipal Election since April 7.

Ballots may be cast in the Marshall County Clerk’s Office on Mondays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. Absentee voting is also available on Saturday, April 25 and Saturday, May 2 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET.

Identity Theft is an Issue When Filing Tax Returns

Police continue to take reports of identity theft from residents attempting to file their 2014 income taxes.

An 18-year-old LaPorte man told LaPorte Police that his parents recently attempted to file their tax return with him listed as a dependent. The tax return was rejected, citing that someone else had already claimed the victim as a dependent. The victim also attempted to access his credit score and learned that a credit card, mortgage and home equity loan were fraudulently established using his identity.

DNR Seeks Lifeguards At State Park Facilities

Those looking to qualify for a summer job, and who may want to get bronzed in the process, can now retrieve a bit of information through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR says it’s taking applications for summer lifeguard positions. Tests are required for first-year lifeguards at State Park facilities. Applicants who have already been lifeguards at more than 10 locations around the state are exempt from taking the test.

Two Local Men Killed in Porter County Accident

Two area residents died in a two-vehicle accident in Porter County last night.

An initial investigation by Porter County deputies found that Roderick Heise, 34, of Knox was southbound on State Road 49 and drove left of center to pass other vehicles near 285 S. in Morgan Township when he struck a northbound van driven by Jade Michael Schneider, 20, of Francesville, according to report in “The Times”. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicles did not carry any passengers.

Video Conferencing Approved for Courts, Jail

The video conferencing equipment in the Marshall County Superior Court 1 and Superior Court 2 courtrooms and the Marshall County Jail will soon be upgraded to include high definition quality.

Judge Dean Colvin told the county council members this week that the county can conduct court hearings via video conferencing to reduce the cost of transporting inmates from the jail to the courthouse for hearings.

The video conference systems are currently inoperable at this time, so the staff is looking to replace the equipment.

Final Readings Forthcoming for Culver Housing Development

The Town of Culver held a public hearing on a project that may see housing developed along State Road 10.

What was initially named “Harbor Landing” has seen a change to “Maple Ridge Villas” to prevent confusion for emergency responders. The development calls for about 30 homes, or condominiums, that will be priced between $175-thousand and $250-thousand.
