Argos Town Council Members to Consider Fire Department Run Ordinance Tonight

Argos officials met in a special meeting last week where they briefly discussed an ordinance pertaining to fire department runs.

Town Council members met with Fire Chief Mark Dean in order to go over the document on Thursday. Clerk-Treasurer Lisa Mullaney explained that currently the department only charges for structure fires. However, the Argos Fire Department frequently responds to other types of calls outside of the town limits. To help supplement the department’s budget, officials are considering charging for these other runs as well. Continue reading

September is National Recovery Month

September is recognized as National Recovery Month. It’s a time where we come together to congratulate those who have overcome their addictions and to recognize the achievements of people currently working toward sobriety. It’s also meant to promote the societal benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery for substance use and mental health disorders.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) with the United States Department of Health and Human Services is behind this initiative. Continue reading

Argos Officials Meet with EMS Director to Discuss Replacement Process, More EMTs Needed

Argos officials met with EMS Director Richie Miller last Thursday to discuss finding his replacement.

Director Miller announced that he will be resigning from his position officially on December 31st of this year. Town Council members met with him in a workshop to go over the duties and responsibilities of his position. They also used that time to brainstorm ideas about how the interview process should go.

Prices at the Pump are the Highest They’ve Been Since 2014

Motorists traveling over the Labor Day weekend can expect to see an average of $2.84 per gallon of gasoline. That’s a 20 cent increase from Labor Day 2017.

According to a news release from Gas Buddy, consumers have seen the most expensive summer at the pump since 2014, with an average of $2.73 per gallon thus far. On average, motorists have shelled of more than $1.11 billion per day on gasoline purchases this season, up from a decade low of $912 million per day in the summer of 2016. Continue reading

PHS Students and Staff Prepare to Help with Parking at the 52nd Annual Blueberry Festival

Many staff members and students from Plymouth High School will be volunteering their time to help park vehicles during the 52nd Annual Marshall County Blueberry Festival. Plymouth Schools Marketing Director Judi Lykowski shared that the activity serves as a huge fundraiser for various clubs that the students participate in.

The organizations that will benefit include the speech and debate club, the local chapter of the AFS International Program, the Chinese and Spanish clubs, the band and choir, the acting club and stage crew, the robotics club, the yearbook and the prom committee. Continue reading

The New Walkerton-Lincoln Township Library Building Will Open Its Doors to the Public Next Month

With construction at the new Walkerton-Lincoln Township Library complete, Director Traci Stewart reports that staff members will be making the move over to the building on Adams Street next month! Stewart said, “The building is finished and we are waiting for the shelves that were ordered to arrive before we can move.”

The new building features two restrooms with multiple stalls, a drinking fountain that fills up water bottles, as well as a cozy reading area with a fireplace and a teen room. Continue reading

Locally-Sourced Food to Find its Way into Hoosier Schools Thanks to Grant Awarded to the State Department of Health

In order to help promote access to locally-sourced food in schools, a 2018 USDA Farm-to-School Grant was recently awarded to the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity.

According to a news release from the organization, ISDH will receive $98,468 over the next two years for the State Department of Agriculture’s ‘Indiana Grown’ program which aims to promote regular access to Indiana-sourced foods in school cafeterias and increase participation in other farm-to-school activities. Bremen School Board Gives the Go-Ahead for Two Bond Projects

Bremen School Board members provided their approval for a couple of different projects when they met last Monday. Superintendent Dr. Jim White said board members moved forward with two projects that were discussed during a pre-bid meeting in July.

He explained, “The board went ahead and accepted to move forward with replacement of a chilling tower and [gave the] go ahead to replace our football lights at the end of the season with LED lighting so that will be a big improvement.” Continue reading

Painting by Triton Graduate Displayed in Mental Health Showcase, School Earns Stipend of Over $1,000

The art program at Triton Junior/Senior High School recently received a boost in funding after former senior student’s painting was selected to be displayed in a showcase entitled “Your Mental Health Matters.

Not only was Triton graduate Montana Golden able to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness with her artwork, she received a recognition award and helped earn her school a stipend of more than $1,100. Continue reading

Paddle to the Max Event to Benefit Culver Boys and Girls Club

This Saturday you can contribute to a great cause while having some fun on Culver’s scenic Lake Maxinkuckee during the second annual “Paddle to the Max” event.

Hosted by Shaka SUP Racing, this event features stand-up paddleboard and kayak races. There will be racing divisions for youth, beginners and advanced paddlers. Though there is a competitive element, participants are also free to come out just for fun.

Five dollars from every registration fee collected will be donated to the Culver Boys and Girls Club. Continue reading

School Officials Explore Options for Bringing On My Way Pre-K Program to Bremen Public Schools

Bremen Public School officials are working toward becoming making the school an accredited On My Way Pre-K facility. Superintendent Dr. Jim White said he received the “go-ahead” to do some research and explore various options during Monday’s school board meeting

He said, “Marshall County is a part of a pilot program for My Way Pre-K and so we’re going to seek certification as being a licensed daycare center and try to slowly move into that realm to fill those needs.” Continue reading
