Officials are actively seeking industries to fill the void of outgoing companies in the Plymouth area.
Marshall County and Plymouth City officials recently met with Indiana Economic Secretary of Commerce (IEDC) Jim Schellinger, two of his top Cabinet people and the Director of the IEDC Elaine Bedel to network and make the area a priority for economic development.
Discussions will continue concerning mechanics within a proposed lease between the Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety and Van Vactor Farms.
David Miller from Van Vactor Farms presented a proposal to the board during their meeting earlier this month and the company’s attorney drew up a simple agreement that was presented to the board Monday night that gives guidance on how money sold from land sales from the techFarm be allocated. The U.S. 31 construction project should wrap up on time. That’s according to INDOT Northwest District Director of Media Relations Doug Moats who mentioned that the weather this week and the addition of the railroad crossing reconstruction should only delay the project a little. The project is set to wrap up the first week of November.
The resurfacing project has been ongoing all summer from 13th Road to State Road 10. The U.S. 31 resurfacing project was bundled with the State Road 17 project. Crews worked on both projects simultaneously at times to keep on schedule. The State Road 17 project has been complete for a couple of months while crews continue to finish U.S. 31.
The Culver Town Council will meet tonight where an update will be given on where to go now that the town was named a Stellar Community that will be followed by Jonathan Leist’s report on town activities.
Becca Pazin from the Culver and Lake Maxinkuckee Visitor Center will present information during tonight’s meeting and Kathy Clark will have a contract request on behalf of the Southwest Conservancy District.
Plymouth officers have made arrests in a burglary incident reported on Aug. 28.
Police say a man entered the Maax business at 1001 N. Oak Drive in Plymouth in the overnight hours on Monday, Aug. 28 and was found by a worker at the bottom of the stairs inside the building with a change machine on top of him.
A Plymouth man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of dealing drugs.
Plymouth police were called to the Dollar General store at 328 Kingston on a report of shoplifting. When officers confronted the suspect, Ronnie Lister, they reportedly found him in possession of six baggies of a substance believed to be methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
Culver Town officials and those who are a part of the Stellar Committee will be joining Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch for a Stellarbration on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon ET at the Indiana Statehouse North Atrium in Indianapolis.
The Town of Culver and the City of Madison were officially named Stellar Communities in the Stellar Communities Designation Program in their respective divisions on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
The Culver-Union Township EMS staff will host an open house Tuesday, Oct. 24 prior to the Culver Town Council meeting.
The department recently purchased a new ambulance and the service recently upgraded to paramedic status. Those attending the open house will learn more about those services as well as receive free blood pressure and glucose checks.
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety will meet tonight where Utility Superintendent Donnie Davidson will present a change order for the Richter Road project. The change order should officially complete the project that includes better connectivity by looping the water connections from Baker Street down to Richter Road and then reconnecting at Jefferson and Warana. The board approved a request at the last meeting to hold a retainer of $6,230.25 upon the punchlist items and those items should now be complete.
The Marshall County Commissioners will be reviewing two speed limit ordinances at their upcoming November meeting.
County Attorney Jim Clevenger told the commissioners this week that he’s still working on an ordinance that would reduce the speed limit on 10B Road adjacent to Ancilla College. It was suggested to lower the speed limit to 35 mph on that road for the safety of students who walk along the road by the Lake House. Clevenger is still researching the distance to include in the ordinance.
Firefighters from the area fire departments recently visited the Walkerton Elementary School to discuss fire safety with students.
Walkerton Elementary School Principal Tim Davis told the John Glenn School Board members this week that it was a great experience for the kids.
The Marshall County Highway Department has completed several miles of paving this year along with berming, pug mill operations, pothole repairs, chip and sealing operations and double chip and sealing operations. Nine grant applications were recently approved to receive funds from the John Glenn Education Foundation.
Superintendent Richard Reese told the John Glenn School Board members this week that $7,500 to $8,000 worth of grants were awarded to teachers who applied for project funding. He added that the names of teachers who applied for the grants will be released at the next school board meeting in November along with the specific projects and grant amounts.
Two years of hard work has paid off for the Town of Culver. Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch called the Culver Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon and told a crowd of anxious Stellar supporters that the town is officially designated as a stellar community through the Stellar Communities Designation Program.
Town Manager Jonathan Leist says the work now starts on several projects listed within the application.
A South Bend man who was found guilty of armed robbery in a two-day trial in June in Marshall County was sentenced by Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 Judge Robert O. Bowen on Wednesday to nine years in the Indiana Department of Corrections with no part of the sentence suspended.
The Marshall County Commissioners received a preliminary comprehensive bridge management plan Monday morning from Ben Beer, Business Development for USI Consultants.
“This is really in conjunction with what is now required by INDOT and LTAP. They have a Bridge Asset Management Plan. This is kind of used to support that document, but now if you want to go for Community Crossings money or other grant money every LPA county has to have a Bridge Asset Management Plan,” said Beer. The John Glenn School Board approved a resolution Tuesday night that would reduce an appropriation by $69,000 to carry over into next year’s budget.
Business Manager Tom Bendy explained that the school board has purchased all of the school buses they are going to purchase this year and the board has the opportunity to move the unused funds to next year’s budget.
The Plymouth Police Department and emergency responders were called to a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 30 west of Oak Drive in Plymouth around 6:14 p.m. Tuesday.
According to police, Michael O’Hara, 57, of Etterik, Wisconsin, was driving his vehicle westbound on U.S. 30 when a vehicle traveling eastbound crossed the median, entered the westbound lane and collided with O’Hara’s vehicle. More Brownfield grants will be sought after for properties in the Marshall County area, but the entity going after the grant will be the Michiana Area Council of Governments (MACOG).
A brownfield is a property previously used for industrial purposes or some commercial uses. It may have been contaminated with hazardous waste and the Brownfield Grant helped assess those properties and plan clean up strategies.
The John Glenn School Board members voted unanimously to adopt the 2018 budgets Tuesday night.
According to Indiana Gateway, the General Fund is listed at $12.7 million with the Capital Projects Fund at $1.3 million and the Bus Replacement Fund at $300,000. The total budget advertised and adopted is $17,730,462.
