The INDOT contracts for projects awarded 2018 Community Crossing grant money were presented to the Marshall County Commissioners for signature Monday morning.
Highway Administrator Laurie Baker said after the contracts are signed the county can begin the process of receiving the grant money totaling $518,322.87. The county’s match is $129,580.72. Continue reading
Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters presented the proposed 2018 road program to the commissioners on Monday morning.
Commissioner Mike Delp asked Peters if there are plans to grind up more roads next year.
“Winter can determine a lot of that come March or April when things start falling out,” said Peters. “At that point, we’ll review a lot of our roads – if we’re going to grind them and put them back. I’m sure there will be a few.” Continue reading

Culver town officials, county representatives, Housing Developer Kevin Berger, and other dignitaries helped break ground on the Sand Hill Farm workforce housing development in Culver Wednesday afternoon.
The housing development includes 24 apartments that will feature affordable one, two and three bedroom units at 540 W. Jefferson Street with hopes of the project complete in 2018. Elkay, one of Culver’s largest employers, will provide the cabinetry for the units in an extensive project partnership. Continue reading
Michelle Bachtel was before the Marshall County Commissioners on Monday morning to ask that the speed limit be omitted from the golf cart ordinance.
She made this request as she drives her golf cart on county roads to access her farm ground on the north side and the south side of U.S. 30 in the Inwood community. She was stopped by a Marshall County deputy who informed her that she could not operate the golf cart on the road. Bachtel explained to the commissioners that the ordinance allows the operation of golf carts on roads that have a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less and the road she utilized that day had a posted speed of 30 mph. The Town of Culver’s Stellarbration event is set for today at the Culver Beach Lodge. The town was named a Stellar Community in the state’s Stellar Communities Designation Program on Oct. 18 after two years of hard work to achieve the status.
Prior to this event, officials will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony on the Sand Hill Farms workforce housing development which is a project detailed in the Stellar Communities application. Construction of this structure will provide housing for those seeking one, two or three bedroom apartments who want to make Culver their home. The project helps complete goals of increasing housing and population, plus an increase in enrollment and economy in Culver. Continue reading

Marshall County Circuit Court Judge Curtis Palmer approached the county commissioners Monday morning with a request to utilize space in the courthouse basement for residents to fill out legal paperwork.
Local and county officials, Marshall County Economic Development Corporation representatives, engineers and other project partners helped break ground for construction of a manufacturing facility in Argos.
The building will be the first on a new 80-acre industrial park on Dewey Street in Argos. Right now the space looks like an empty corn field, but that empty ground will be filled with the sight of an expanding economy and jobs. Continue reading
The Marshall County Commissioners will be looking for a new highway administrator in the next few weeks. Laurie Baker submitted her resignation on Monday morning during the commissioners meeting that is effective Friday, Dec. 29.
Baker stated that she’s had a great experience working with the county in different aspects for a total of 15 years, but she’s looking forward to moving in a different direction and focusing on family time out of the area. Continue reading
The opioid crisis affects everyone and it is not being overlooked in Marshall County.
According to the Marshall County Health Department figures, the number of overdose deaths due to opioid and prescription drug abuse went from one in 2015 to 13 in 2016 and 16 already in 2017. County Attorney Jim Clevenger presented information to the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning asking them to consider joining an Indianapolis firm to pursue opioid litigation in a multi-district, federal litigation against the manufacturers and distributors of highly addictive prescription medications. The John Glenn School Board members will consider the 2017-2018 Master Teacher Contract for approval when they meet tonight. The contract will determine wages based on teacher evaluations from the previous year.
The board members will appoint a library board member to the St. Joseph Public Library and consider early graduation requests for five students. Superintendent Richard Reese will also update the board on corporation information and the building principals will have their regular reports. Continue reading
A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for Tuesday, Nov. 7 for the construction of a 50,000 square foot manufacturing center in Argos.
Marshall County Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Jerry Chavez says the building will be built within Argos’ 75 acre industrial park. The building will be expandable up to 300,000 square feet and will have access to high speed fiber.
Three people were arrested Friday night after police were called to investigate suspicious activity at Walmart.
Plymouth police officers responded to call of two people nodding off inside of a running vehicle in the parking lot. According to police, 27-year-old Shannyn Fritz, of Kewanna, and 27-year-old Shane Webb, of Rochester, said their friend Jerri Harris was inside shopping. After further investigation, Fritz and Webb were allegedly found to be in possession of a syringe, heroin and methamphetamine. Continue reading
The completion date for the U.S. 31 project has been pushed back.
According to INDOT Northwest District Director of Media Relations Doug Moats, the weather and other factors have delayed the completion of the project. The railroad crossing has become a little more entailed so crews anticipate a three week delay. Continue reading

The commissioners will open bids for the lease on the farm grounds at the Shady Rest Home site. The building is not for lease, but the land surrounding the parcel is up for lease as it is every few years.
Bremen police officers made several arrests over the weekend on a variety of charges.
A South Bend man was arrested Friday after police say a civil complaint was filed with police just after 10 p.m. on E. Plymouth Street. Joshua D. Gay, 36, was booked into the Marshall County Jail on preliminary charges of battery, disorderly conduct, public intoxication and criminal mischief. Continue reading

A model of the USS Indiana SSN 789 Nuclear Submarine will be stopping in Plymouth on Nov. 9 along with a few former crew members.
Members of the Marshall County Blueberry Festival announced this week that in observance of Veteran’s Day the model of the USS Indiana Nuclear Submarine will be available for viewing near the Veteran’s Memorial on the eastside of the Marshall County Courthouse in Plymouth.
