Culver Town Council Opens Public Hearing on Proposed Rezoning Request

The Culver Town Council members opened a public hearing last week concerning a rezoning request at 830 N. Lakeshore Drive.

The property, known as The Inn by the Lake, is currently zoned R-2 and the new owners of the property would like to rezone the property as C-2.

A motel/hotel was built on the property in 1956 and a similar-type business has remained there since then.  The rezoning would put the property in a commercial zoning which meets the town’s Comprehensive Plan.

Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim read aloud three letters received by her office.  Two residents were against the rezoning as they have concerns about what the new owners will do to the property once it is zoned commercial and want to maintain the integrity of the residential district.  One resident was supportive of the rezoning.  Another resident also expressed support of the rezoning as presented.

The new owners stated that there are no plans to make changes to the property.  They would like to run The Inn by the Lake as it currently is being operated – like a motel.  The previous owners lived at the property which is why the property was zoned residential.

After the public hearing was closed, the council later took action to adopt the rezoning ordinance with a unanimous vote.
