Marshall County Sheriff Requests Kitchen Help, Council Considers Sheriff’s Contract

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel told the Marshall County Council members Monday morning that a part-time cook is desperately needed at the jail.

Sheriff Hassel said the full-time cook is feeling overwhelmed.

He said, “I’ve advertised for a part-time cook and I can’t get anybody.  I will re-advertise and post that position again today, but if he doesn’t get assistance, he’s going to retire on January 29.”

The cook prepares menus, orders food and follows guidelines when it comes to healthy meals, and utilizes inmate trustees to prepare the meals, but the sheriff said he feels he cannot take any time off.

“If you walk into the kitchen, he has recipes for what that inmate worker is going to make that day at their stations.  He’s got an amazing operation going.  I will be in real trouble if I lose him.”

If a part-time employee cannot be found, the sheriff could turn to an outside service to cook the meals and deliver them to the jail.  He has not determined what sort of impact that would have on his budget.

This will be the third time Sheriff Hassel has advertised the position.  The link can be found here

Additionally, the Marshall County Council members approved the sheriff’s contract with a unanimous vote.  The salary ordinance was also approved to reflect an error in the sheriff’s salary.  The salary change was made to reflect $91,125.80.
