Marshall County Commissioner Kevin Overmyer presents Marshall County Councilwoman Penny Lukenbill with Sagamore of the Wabash distinction

Marshall County Councilwoman Penny Lukenbill was surprised Monday morning to be honored with the Sagamore of the Wabash distinction by Governor Eric J. Holcomb.

The resolution read aloud during the Marshall County Council meeting by Marshall County Commission President Kevin Overmyer acknowledges her “Humanity in Living, her Loyalty in Friendship, her Wisdom in Counsel, and her Inspiration in Leadership.”

Jackie Dermody from United States Senator Mike Braun’s office presented Lukenbill with a United States flag during the meeting.

Dermody stated, “At the request of the Honorable Mike Braun, United States Senator, this flag was flown for Penny Lukenbill in honor of her service and dedication to Marshall County from September 1999 to December 31, 2020.  Also recognized is her work as a county auditor, county treasurer, county council member, and board member and president of the Association of Indiana Counties.  Respectfully, Mike Braun.”

“How lovely!” commented Lukenbill.

The county council members also read a county resolution that acknowledges Lukenbill’s efforts in her service to the community. John Oliver also passed along some words of appreciation for Lukenbill’s time in office in Marshall County.

Additionally, outgoing County Councilman Jon Van Vactor was honored Monday morning for his eight years on the council and previously serving as Marshall County Sheriff.  A resolution was read to mark those accomplishments.

Judy Stone was also recognized for her 12 years of service on the Marshall County Council. She retired earlier this month with distinguished service, serving four years as president.  A resolution in her honor was also read into the record.

Every council member told Lukenbill and Van Vactor that they will be missed and commented on their friendship, leadership and mentorship in their years of service to Marshall County residents over the last several years.
