Marshall County Highway Superintendent Seeks Funding to Help Close out Flood Repairs

Marshall County Highway Superintendent Jason Peters asked the county council last week to ask for funds to help close out the repairs from the 2018 flood.

Peters said, “During the flooding event, Marshall County Council appropriated $1.5 million to the Marshall County Highway Department out of Rainy Day knowing the repairs were going to be significant and costly.  With those funds, emergency repairs and critical repairs were completed due to road closures, safety and potential hazards from the severity of the flood.  From that $1.5 million, $721,161.74 was spent for these repairs,”

The remaining funds were re-appropriated back into the Rainy Day Fund along with the money FEMA granted the county in the amount of $79,961.82.

Peters asked for $600,000 to make repairs to bridges.

Commission President Kevin Overmyer said Governor Holcomb declared an emergency in Marshall County in 2018 that expired in 2019.  Overmyer said he’s spoken with DNR officials about the issues and they will be helping the county to get the permits needed to make these repairs.

County Council President Judy Stone asked if the $600,000 requested would make all of the necessary repairs.  Peters replied that it will get a lot of it done, but it will be a good start.

The council members agreed to support the request with an additional appropriation request to come in March.

They also gave praise to the highway department for the work the crews do on the county roads.
