Riverside Intermediate School’s Community Engagement Efforts Shared with School Board

The Plymouth School Board got an update last week on Riverside Intermediate School students’ efforts to engage with the community. In a series of videos, board members learned about several events that have taken place since the beginning of the school year.

Last month, students had the chance to hear from Holocaust survivor Frank Grunwald, during his visit to Ancilla College. Teacher Sarah Gillard discussed the importance of letting students get firsthand knowledge of the event, while there are still survivors around to tell their story.

The school board also learned about students’ recent field trip to Miller’s Assisted Living to play games and hang out with the residents, along with the school’s tradition of raising funds for Relay for Life. Riverside students also encouraged family members to donate blood during a September 11 blood drive, and the event far exceeded its donation goal.

Riverside Principal Kyle Coffman told board members that the middle school years are critical to students’ development, and community plays an important role. “Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter,” Coffman said, “and that is what we want our students at Riverside to understand about Plymouth, about themselves.”

Board Member Larry Pinkerton congratulated Riverside staff and students for what he called the tremendous learning opportunities that will last a lifetime.
