Plymouth City Council Agrees to Habitat for Humanity Donation

The Plymouth City Council members took action Monday night to move the Habitat for Humanity project forward in the planning process.

City Attorney Sean Surrisi told the council that a parcel of land on West Garro Street is available for sale for the purpose of building four, single-family homes as part of the Habitat for Humanity project.

The previous proposal asked the city to donate land worth $50,000 on Water Street for the construction of townhomes, but it was met with negative feedback from community members at a Plymouth BZA meeting.  That caused officials to seek an alternate location for the project.

The amended proposal now asks for $50,000 to assist in the acquisition of the West Garro Street property and a portion of the site prep work at that location that includes the removal of a concrete slab.

A fund from where that money would be taken has not been decided.

The donation would be contingent on if the Habitat for Humanity is approved for the grant and will be held by the city until that time.  Surrisi mentioned that the grant consultant is confident that it will be awarded since there are projects anticipated in Argos and Bourbon as part of the application.

The Plymouth City Council members approved the request with a unanimous vote.

Habitat for Humanity Director Dean Byers informed the council that the organization is the recipient of Marshall County Community Foundation grant funds in the amount of $20,000 for this year and next year.
