Marshall County Sheriff, Commissioners to Put Hold on Intergovernmental Agreement

An intergovernmental agreement between Marshall County and other jail facilities is now on hold.

In March, the commissioners agreed to enter into an agreement with Elkhart County to house inmates there to help keep down the population at the Marshall County Jail that continues to be at and over capacity.  For now, that agreement is on hold.

Marshall County Attorney Jim Clevenger told the county commissioners on Monday morning that he spoke to Prosecutor Nelson Chipman who stated that the pre-trial efforts that involve the Prosecutor’s Office, Probation, Community Corrections, the jail staff, and the judges that were put into place last fall to alleviate the issue of jail overcrowding have not hit the full effect.

“As those start to take place that’s going to add more assistance to the jail overcrowding situation,” said Clevenger.  “He also tells me that he’s got a deputy who’s attending a seminar for a couple of days on pre-trial release alternatives.  Hopefully they provide some additional ideas.”

Meetings are scheduled this week between officials to discuss the issues a little further.

The commissioners and Sheriff Matt Hassel will keep the agreement on hold until further notice.
