Marshall County Highway Supervisor Presents 2018 Road Program

Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters presented the proposed 2018 road program to the commissioners on Monday morning.

Commissioner Mike Delp asked Peters if there are plans to grind up more roads next year.

“Winter can determine a lot of that come March or April when things start falling out,” said Peters. “At that point, we’ll review a lot of our roads – if we’re going to grind them and put them back. I’m sure there will be a few.”

The highway department did grind up a few deteriorated roads this year. Some of those roads did receive new pavement.

Peters pointed out that the projects listed for 2018 may go over budget, but they will look closer at priority needs when spring comes.

“I know that’s going to be over what we actually have funded for our road program but I think this year we were close to $1.3 million. I think this one will be just a shade under $2 million.”

The preliminary plans call for 21.75 miles of paving including the Oakcrest, Foresthlls and Nutmeg subdivisions, 13.5 miles of double seal, 41.25 miles of chip and seal, and a few areas of crack seal. German Township will see a majority of work done in 2018 with nearly 27 miles of road work planned. The total cost of projects is approximately $1,737,000.

Potential Community Crossings projects to be requested in 2018 include 9th Road from Pioneer to the county line, 13th Road from State Road 17 to Olive and North Michigan Street from the city limits to 3A Road.
