Bourbon Property on Hold for Demolition

The demolition of a property in Bourbon unfit for human habitation may come down Oct. 1.

Marshall County Attorney James Clevenger told the county commissioners Monday morning that the bank placed a stay of demolition on the property that expired on Sept. 15. A motion to extend the stay another 45 days was filed in the court system, but the county quickly filed an objection stating that enough time has elapsed for work to be done. A judgment has not been filed in the case as of Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Health Administrator Christine Stinson told the commissioners in August that she hired an exterminator to take care of the rat-infested home at 606 N. Thayer Street in Bourbon. The home is in gross violation of several health codes and is within 300 feet of the Triton Elementary School.

The company hired to conduct the demolition, Lanker Services, will not be able to perform the project until Oct. 1 due to their schedule. They came in with the lowest bid to raze the building at $11,120 and will honor that bid even though the contract states a previous date for demolition.

Stinson hopes to recoup the extermination and demolition cost by placing a lien against the property.
