Culver Stellarbration and Sand Hill Farm Groundbreaking Today

The Town of Culver’s Stellarbration event is set for today at the Culver Beach Lodge. The town was named a Stellar Community in the state’s Stellar Communities Designation Program on Oct. 18 after two years of hard work to achieve the status.

Prior to this event, officials will conduct a groundbreaking ceremony on the Sand Hill Farms workforce housing development which is a project detailed in the Stellar Communities application. Construction of this structure will provide housing for those seeking one, two or three bedroom apartments who want to make Culver their home. The project helps complete goals of increasing housing and population, plus an increase in enrollment and economy in Culver. Continue reading →

Culver Stellarbration Time Moved Back

The time for Culver’s local Stellarbration event has been amended to accommodate a change in Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch’s schedule.

Culver was named the Division II Stellar Community by Lt. Governor Crouch on Wednesday, Oct. 18. The state Stellarbration was held the following week while the Town of Culver scheduled the local event for Nov. 8. The start time for the event has been moved to 4:30 p.m. ET. Continue reading →

Town of Culver to Take Part in Stellarbration Activities

Culver Town officials and those who are a part of the Stellar Committee will be joining Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch for a Stellarbration on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon ET at the Indiana Statehouse North Atrium in Indianapolis.

The Town of Culver and the City of Madison were officially named Stellar Communities in the Stellar Communities Designation Program in their respective divisions on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Town of Culver Designated a Stellar Community

Two years of hard work has paid off for the Town of Culver. Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch called the Culver Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon and told a crowd of anxious Stellar supporters that the town is officially designated as a stellar community through the Stellar Communities Designation Program.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist says the work now starts on several projects listed within the application.

Stellar Site Visit Today in Culver

The Town of Culver will welcome officials from the Stellar Communities Designation Program today for the official site visit. The town is a finalist in Division 2 in the Stellar Communities Designation Program.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist said today’s event will take several hours.

“We get about three hours to present information to the state review team that includes representatives from 14 different state agencies,” said Leist. “It’s our chance to bring the plan that we presented to them back in August to life. We’ll show them some of the sites where the projects would take place and sell them on Culver while they’re here.”

Fundraiser Created to Keep Culver Sign

The temporary giant Culver sign located on the pedestrian bridge in the Culver Town Park can stay there on a permanent basis with the community’s help.

The Town of Culver began a “Creating Stellar Places” fundraiser where donors can win prizes for donating any denomination to retain the Culver sign . For example, the first 15 donors will receive a “Stellar Town Year Round” yard sign. Other donors could receive a Culver t-shirt, and a chance to be fire chief or police chief for a day in Culver.

Town of Culver Prepares for Stellar Site Visit

The Town of Culver is beginning preparations for a visit from officials with the Stellar Communities Designation Program. The event is set for Oct. 5.

The goal of the Indiana Stellar Communities Designation Program is to help rural towns, like Culver, gather the resources needed to invest in improvements for economic revitalization. Those projects could include housing or other community-minded interests to renew spirit to the area or to alleviate decline.

New Town of Culver Logo Revealed

Graphic Designer Shelley Schrimsher from Unlocked Creativity presented a new logo for the Town of Culver during the Culver Town Council meeting last week. You can get more info here on the best graphic design ideas.

Schrimsher said she has worked on getting the right logo for the past few years and did extensive research on how to go about creating something just right for the Town of Culver. She said words like history, memories, home, lake, and Mayberry were among the few she came up with when talking with residents young and old. A committee was also formed to provide input into what to include in the logo.

Town of Culver Awarded Grant Funds

Culver Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe announced Tuesday night that the town is the recipient of $270,000 in Regional Cities grant funds.

The council plans to use that grant money toward solving a lack of housing for potential residents of Culver. The plan is to build the Sandhill Farms workforce development housing facility on Jefferson Street. The building would include 24 apartments with one, two or three bedroom units. The town will fund infrastructure to the proposed housing development which includes water and sewer lines and sidewalks.

Culver residents have a chance to be a part of the Town of Culver’s quest to be a Stellar Community by participating in a Stellar Video production. This is the second consecutive year Culver has been selected as a finalist in the Stellar Communities Designation Program. Families and individuals have a chance to have their voice heard on why they choose Culver in a 30 sec video interview. Residents may also be photographed with a sign that explains why they choose Culver to be included in a photo montage.

Marshall County Council Supports Culver’s Stellar Communities Projects

Culver Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe and Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist went before the Marshall County Council to ask for a letter of support to include in their application for the Stellar Communities Designation Program grant.

Munroe mentioned that the town is attempting to show that the town is working with the county and that the county can benefit from the projects that are proposed in the Stellar Communities plan. The commissioners have already approved an in-kind donation of the installation of one mile of the walking/biking trail through the Culver Town Park and around Lake Maxinkuckee. The township is also putting forth support of the Cavalier Sports Center for upgrades and additions to the facilities at the Culver Community School Corporation. Several local and county organizations have offered grant match money for the various projects in the plan as well as in-kind donations and volunteer efforts.

Safe Routes to School Construction in Culver Underway

The second round of the Safe Routes to School project in Culver is just getting started.

Sidewalks will be installed on the south side of Academy Street from School Street to Lake Shore and on College Avenue.

Phend and Brown was contracted to complete the work at a cost of $330,000. The Town of Culver secured grant money for this project.

Culver Amphitheater Crowdfunding Effort Continues

A crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a proposed amphitheater in the Culver Town Park is just two weeks into the effort.

Just a few more weeks remain to raise the $30,000 needed to receive an Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority matching grant of $30,000 toward the project.

Stellar Communities Designation Program Finalists Announced

The finalists for the 2017 Stellar Communities Designation Program were announced early Thursday morning.

The Town of Culver was selected a finalist for the second consecutive year. Finalist communities are divided into two different categories based on population for the designation award. Culver will be placed into Division 2 which is for communities that have a population of 5,999 or less. Culver will compete against the Town of Churubusco in Whitley County and the City of Union City in Randolph County.

Town of Culver to Accept Sidewalk Replacement Applications

Town of Culver officials will begin taking applications for the 2017 sidewalk replacement program beginning Monday, April 3.

Measurements of the sidewalk, curb or combination of both must be included in the application. The application will be reviewed by Street Superintendent Bob Porter and his staff will confirm the dimensions of the potential project. The town council will then approve a project by recommendation of the street superintendent. The homeowner will be notified by letter if a sidewalk replacement project was selected.

Marshall County Takes Over Culver Building and Planning Department

Culver Residents Encouraged to Spring Clean the Community

Culver residents can dispose of items that are too large for their weekly trash pickup during a special Saturday community event. Dumpsters will be placed in the large lot behind the Inn by the Lake from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. for drop-off. Volunteers from the CAVS Club and Culver Academies Community Services Council will be available to help with unloading. The street department is also available to pick up items people can’t bring to the lot themselves. Continue reading →
