The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is updating several of the dash cameras in its police cruisers.

During Monday morning’s Marshall County Commissioner’s meeting, Sheriff Matt Hassel made the request to purchase three new dash cams. The catch is that the company typically used for such purchases is getting out of the business.

Sheriff’s Department to Begin Updating Taser Inventory

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is hoping to update some of their Taser equipment, but it comes with a cost.

During Monday morning’s County Commissioner’s meeting, Sheriff Matt Hassel made the request. He says the current inventory of Taser weapons has aged to the extent that the manufacturing company, also named Taser, does not provide warranty and repair support.

Commissioners Considers Various Options for Securing County Building

Another option for securing the Marshall County Building will be presented to the County Council at their meeting next week.

Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel discussed a recommendation from the County’s Personnel Committee to hire another security officer during Monday’s Commissioner’s Meeting. The recommendation comes following a previous recommendation to hire a deputy EMA Director to provide security at the site.

Database Sought for Tracking Registered Buggies

Sheriff-stARThe Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is hoping to be able to better track license plates for buggies registered in the county.

Earlier this year, the Marshall County Commissioners established an ordinance outlining the procedures and fees. Buggies used by local Amish populations are thought to cause damage to local roadways, but prior to the ordinance adoption, a fee is not applied to their registration to help pay a portion of the damage costs.

Sheriff’s Department Looks to Purchase Deputies Off-Duty Weapons for Added Protections

news-2The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is planning to encourage deputies to begin carrying weapons while off-duty.

The proposal was brought forward by Sheriff Matt Hassel. Should Sheriff’s Deputies begin carrying weapons while conducting their personal routine business within the county, it is thought an added layer of protection would be in place.

Multiple Counts Filed Against Kosciusko County Sheriff, Two Others

ChipmanKosciuskoAn investigation into the alleged criminal activity of a Kosciusko County resident has also led to the arrest of the county’s Sheriff.

Multiple charges have been filed against three individuals following an extensive investigation by Warsaw Police and Indiana State Police. A press conference was held Monday afternoon to address the matter by appointed Special Prosecutor Nelson Chipman in Marshall County. He says the grand jury charges stem from an investigation started as part of Kevin Bronson’s separate cocaine and gang-activity arrest in August of 2015.

Marshall County Council Adopts Budget for Sheriff’s Commissary Fund

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department now has a budget for spending revenue generated out of its Commissary Fund.

During Monday morning’s Marshall County Council meeting, Sheriff Matt Hassel approached the fiscal body about the prospect of adopting a budget for certain purchases that hopes to improve the department. The Commissary Fund is the account where money gained from the sale of products to inmates incarcerated at the Marshall County Justice Center is placed.

Greater Analysis Expected with Future Sheriff’s Department Camera Upgrade

SheriffThe Marshall County Sheriff’s Department will be getting an upgrade to some equipment used to interview possible suspects.

During Monday morning’s County Commissioners meeting, Sheriff Matt Hassel and Prosecutor Nelson Chipman presented information about the upgrades. Currently, the system used by Marshall County to interview individuals associated with crimes relies on the use of cameras.

Marshall County Approves Gifting Service Weapon to Retired Deputies

Marshall County’s steps to provide law enforcement officers with their service weapon follows similar action taken by the City of Plymouth to bestow their police officers with their firearm upon retirement.

Marshall County Considers Setting Curfew Amid State Changes

Marshall County may soon consider an ordinance specifying a curfew for youth residing, or traveling through the County.

During Monday morning’s Marshall County Commissioner’s meeting, Sheriff Matt Hassel explained to the board that the state of Indiana has made changes leaving the responsibility on several matters up to local governments.
