This holiday season, Home Instead Senior Care is giving you the unique opportunity to be Santa to elderly individuals who may otherwise go without gifts.

The ‘Be a Santa to a Senior’ initiative intends to bring holiday cheer into the lives of local senior citizens who may not have family around this time of the year and you can click here for elder placement professionals who will help you with the formalities . If you bring in a donation to the Plymouth or LaPorte locations today around 10 a.m. ET, you will have a chance to enjoy some soup and chili thanks to Home Instead Senior Care staff. Some gift suggestions include hats, scarves and gloves as well as blankets, robes socks and slippers. Parent College Night at Lincoln Junior High School

Lincoln Jr. High School in Plymouth will be hosting its second annual parent college night from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. tonight. All 7th and 8th grade students, as well as their parents are invited to attend this informative program.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Plymouth Wesleyan Church on Michigan Street.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town a Little Sooner than You’d Think

Santa will be visiting Plymouth a whole month early! On Saturday, November 25th Santa will arrive on a fire truck during the Holiday Parade at 6 p.m.

The parade will be on Michigan Street, starting at Adams Street and ending in River Park Square. Santa will make his way to River Park Square for the tree lighting ceremony. The Park Department will perform a light show after the Christmas tree is lit. When the light show is complete, Santa will be at the Marshall County Museum for photos. Model trains will be running at the museum starting at 11 a.m.

Hot chocolate and cookies will be available all evening. Grab the whole family and come out for a night of festivities featuring Old Saint Nick as the guest of honor.

Senator Donnelly to Talk Future Farm Bill at Ancilla Tomorrow

This Friday, Senator Joe Donnelly will hold a farm bill listening session in Cana Hall on the Ancilla College campus.

Senator Donnelly is a member of the US Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. The current farm bill is scheduled to expire next year so Donnelly is seeking public input about agricultural matters, specifically farm policy issues that are integral to consider when the new farm bill is being written. Democratic Party to Hold Gala Dinner at Local Establishment this Sunday

Marshall County Democrat Chairman Jim Smart announced that this year’s Democrat Gala Dinner will be held on Sunday, November 12 at Opie’s Deli and Office in downtown Plymouth. Social hour will start at 4 p.m. and the dinner portion will commence at 5:30 p.m.

Smart added that he is pleased to see that three qualified candidates will run in the May primary and the winner will eventually face incumbent Jackie Walorski for the 2nd District Congressional seat in November of 2018. Continue reading →

Texas Fugitive Taken into Custody by Detective Sergeant with the Plymouth Police Department

On Monday, October 30 the Plymouth Police Department received information regarding a fugitive from Texas living in Plymouth. According to the police report on Tuesday, October 31 at approximately 1 p.m. the fugitive, 52-year-old Mary Soto, was observed by Detective Sergeant Leo Mangus in the 1200 Block of North Walnut Street. Howl-o-Ween: Trims and Treats Fundraiser to Assist Marshall County Humane Society

Parrett Veterinary Clinic in Plymouth is offering a special event this Halloween that will provide a service to pet owners and also raise money for the Marshall County Humane Society.

From 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. today (Tuesday) the clinic is holding their Howl-o-Ween: Trims and Treats event where individuals can have their pet’s nails trimmed for $10. One-hundred percent of the proceeds collected will go to the Marshall County Humane Society. Several students from Plymouth High School have volunteered to help out with the event.

Costumes are optional and walk-ins are welcome. One staff member has made some colorful candy baskets to provide to patrons. All offered treats for people and pets will be peanut-free.

This Saturday, Plymouth Has Plenty of Ways to Get You into the Halloween Spirit

This Saturday, Plymouth Chamber of Commerce is hosting an event that will supply sugary sweets to costumed kiddos a few days before Halloween. Downtown Trick-or-Treat will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow. Michigan Street will be closed between Laporte Street and Washington Street from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Pilot News is hosting a costume contest starting at noon and MAX 98.3 will be on the site at 214 N Michigan Street doing a live remote describing the spooky scene.

Bremen, John Glenn and Plymouth Marching Bands to Compete in ISSMA Semi-State Competition

Four local high school marching bands will be heading down to Indianapolis tomorrow for the Indiana State School Music Association Open Class Semi-State Marching Band Festival.

Students from Bremen, John Glenn, Knox and Plymouth will join 80 other bands from around the state competing to be chosen as one of the 10 bands who will represent their class at the 45th Annual Indiana State Marching Band Finals.

Each band is entered into a category based on school size and that influences where they perform. Pride of Plymouth Marching Band is led by their director Bryan Ames and they will be competing in Open Class B. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day This Saturday

This Saturday, individuals have the opportunity to help prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. The Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency are holding the 14th Prescription Drug Take Back on Saturday October 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This service is free, anonymous and there are no questions asked. The initiative addresses the prevalent public safety and health issue of prescription drugs being obtained from family and friends in order to be abused or sold. In the past 13 drug take back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in over 8.1 million pounds of pills, which is more than 4,000 tons. Continue reading →

Marshall County Treasurer Reminds Residents of Approaching Tax Deadline

Marshall County Treasurer Angie Birchmeier wishes to remind all community members that the 2016 payable 2017 tax bills second installment will be due Monday, November 13th. That means that individuals have three weeks to be sure all the correct information makes it to the proper channels.

Mailed payments must have the correct address, proper postage and be postmarked by the postal service by November 13th. If you wish to have a receipt, enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your payment.

The Marshall County Treasurer’s Office is located in Room 206 of the County Building at 112 W. Jefferson Street in Plymouth. There is a drop box on the south end of the County Building for after-hours payments. Continue reading →

Shiloh Woods Presents the Walk of Nightmares

Halloween is right around the corner and there’s a spooky way to spend your Saturday right here in Marshall County. The Walk of Nightmares will take place at Shiloh Woods in Plymouth this weekend and next weekend.

From 7p.m. until 11 p.m. tonight scare-seekers are encouraged to come walk the trails at Shiloh Woods, located at 5433 Quince Road. The cost of admission is $10 per person.

Cast members from Room 47 Productions will be at 15 different stations scattered throughout the woods. The haunted attraction has been rated “PG-13” so patrons are encouraged to be over the age of 12.

The attraction is also not recommended to individuals with heart conditions, epilepsy, extreme sensitivity to light and sound or any other medical conditions that could prove hazardous if exposed to environmental extremes. Continue reading →

Lifeplex Dance Academy is Throwing a Fall Ball Tonight

The Lifeplex Dance Academy is encouraging community members to fall in love with dance at tonight’s Fall Ball. The event will run from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m and will be catered by Fusion Café.

From 6 until 7 o’clock tonight there will be line dancing that will feature various styles of music such as Latin, country, R&B and more. From 7 to 9 p.m. the Sentimental Journey’s Band will be performing live, playing 40s and 60s style music. Here/Hear is Bringing Their Mental Illness and Mental Health Initiative to Ancilla College

Here/Hear is a nonprofit organization, based out of Plymouth, which works with a number of initiatives in order to help with mental illness. This week, the director of the organization Dr. Nate Crawford will be delivering his lecture, “Taking Care of Me: Tips for Living Well” as a part of The Lampen Lecture series at Ancilla College.

The Lampen Lecture series was named for Ancilla’s first president Sr. Joel Lampen and though it is sponsored by the college and the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, residents of surrounding communities are encouraged to attend the free lecture series any time.

On Thursday, October 19th Dr. Crawford will be speaking in Cana Hall at 12:45 p.m. (EDT). His organization creates content for the web that helps people navigate the issues surrounding mental illness and they speak with students and parents about the affliction. Their mission statement says that they believe music and the arts provide a great way to engage people in conversations about mental illness and mental health.

Free Outdoor Movie Night at River Park Square

Looking for a family-friendly way to spend Friday the 13th? Come down to River Park Square for the Free Freaky Friday Family Outdoor Movie Night. The event will commence at 7:30 p.m. and the featured film will be the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus.

Since the event will be outdoors, patrons are encouraged dress accordingly and to bring their own blankets and chairs to use during the showing of the movie. The Marshall County Girls Softball Travel League will be running a concession stand on site. They’ll be selling hot chocolate, soda pop, hot dogs and popcorn for a dollar each. Continue reading →

Learn About Marshall County’s Haunted History on Friday the 13th

The Marshall County Historical Society Museum will be holding their final brown bag lunch event of the season on Friday the 13th. Community members are encouraged to bring a lunch down to the museum at 123 N Michigan Street in Plymouth to hear from a special speaker.

Mindy Langdon, community relations for the museum, said the historian will reveal some of the haunted history of Marshall County, “Our guest speaker is Jeff Kenney and he’s from the Culver area and he’s got some really great ghost stories to tell about things in the area that are kind of spooky.”

The event is held from noon to one, but concludes a little before the hour to allow individuals enough time to make it back to work if they’re on their lunch break. Get into the Halloween spirit a few weeks early by learning about the mysterious stories attached to local places you may see regularly.

Fight Breast Cancer Every Step of the Way at Ounce of Prevention’s 5k on Saturday

This Sunday, come out to the Plymouth Greenway Trails to show your support for breast cancer awareness and to honor individuals who are currently fighting the disease and those who have lost their lives to it. The local organization Ounce of Prevention will be hosting their 5k for Cancer Fundraiser from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Ounce of Prevention is an organization that was founded by two sisters, Jessica Oliver and Jennifer Oliver Houin. The sisters experienced the disease directly with the loss of two grandmothers and the diagnosis of their sister-in-law. After wondering what they could do to help support others in their community, they decided to take action in 2003 by establishing Ounce of Prevention. One could see more and get info on getting the right kind of treatment and get their doubts cleared by professionals.

Their mission is to raise awareness about breast cancer and to gather funds locally that will be invested locally. All proceeds raised from the 5k for Cancer and other fund raising events remain in Marshall County.

There is still time to sign-up online but onsite registration will also be available beginning at noon. The registration fee is $25 and includes a t-shirt. Plymouth Farmer’s Market to Feature a Cards for our Troops Event

This weekend at the Plymouth Farmer’s Market, Project Kindness is teaming up with Operation Quiet Comfort to help display the community’s appreciation toward wounded and ill members of the armed forces. Community members of all ages are encouraged to come out and contribute to the Cards for Our Troops event.

Operation Quiet Comfort is a national organization that exists for the sole purpose of honoring and comforting military men and women who fall ill or are injured in the line of duty. Project Kindness is a local non-profit organization aimed at having monthly events to inspire, motivate and encourage children of all ages to perform acts of kindness in their everyday lives.

Making personalized greeting cards to give to the sick and injured individuals who defend this country is one way to relay our gratitude for their sacrifices. Cards for our Troops will be happening at the farmer’s market from 7:30 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 7th.
