A single vehicle-accident on Plymouth-Goshen Trail sent a Bremen man to the hospital early Tuesday morning.

NIPSCO Lowers Requested Gas Rate Increase, Citing Federal Tax Reform

The company says residential gas customers now paying $50 per month could expect to see their monthly bill increase to $58.10, rather than $59.80, as originally proposed.
Removal of Tanks at Old Bremen Gas Station Reveals Issue
The removal of the old underground gas tanks from the old Clark gas station at the corner of State Road 106 and State Road 331 in Bremen has revealed a unique issue.
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the demolition company found some other type of material to remove.
Residents Notify Officials of Fraudulent NIPSCO Calls
NIPSCO officials are warning customers that calls are being made by unknown callers claiming to be affiliated with NIPSCO.
According to officials, the callers are contacting customers demanding payment through a prepaid card. The calls are fraudulent.
Save Money on Heating This Winter
Cold temperatures drive heating costs. With the cold snap experienced over the past couple of weeks, heating bills will be high.
NIPSCO suggests setting the thermostat two to four degrees below what you’re used to in order to cut down the heat bill. Change air filters often throughout the season as dirty filters block air causing the furnace to work harder.
Culver-Union Township Fire Department to Upgrade Lighting
New lighting will be installed at the Culver-Union Township Fire Department.
Fire Chief Terry Wakefield told Culver Town Council members this week that he’s been working for a long time to update the lighting to include LED lights. He said the cost for the 51 lights needed for the project is $7,896.30. NIPSCO will review the work and reimburse the town $80 per light. He said it works with the lighting package they have through NIPSCO.
Driver Leaves Passenger at Scene of Accident
The driver involved in a Sunday morning accident fled the scene on foot and left the passenger in the car.
According to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, a 2005 Acura was traveling westbound on Plymouth-Goshen Trail just east of Randolph Street shortly after 6 a.m. when it left the north side of the road for an unknown reason. The report states that a vehicle struck a utility pole and caused power lines to fall on the ground. The vehicle continued a short distance into a field where it came to a stop.
Large Gas Leak Reported after Accident
A large gas leak was reported in the 8,000 block of Union Road shortly after 3 a.m. Monday after the occupants of the home awoke to the smell of natural gas and recognized the sound of the leak.
Energy Safe Kids Presentation Coming to A Classroom Near You
This November, the National Energy Foundation and Northern Indiana Public Service Company(NIPSCO) are teaming up to deliver more than 100 ‘Energy Safe Kids’ classroom presentations in schools across Northern Indiana.
Energy Safe Kids is a unique and engaging program designed to encourage fourth graders to think about energy sources and how to be safe around them whether outdoors, at home or at school. Energy educators teach students the basics about energy and energy safety.
There will be two weeks of presentation beginning on Monday, November 6th. Interested individuals who are within NIPSCO’s service territory can register at EnergySafeKids.org/NIPSCO. Space is limited so fourth grade teachers who want to have an energy safety specialist speak to their students should sign-up as soon as possible. If you’re unable to get someone into your classroom this year, you can still register in advance for the 2018 program.
NIPSCO Projects Winter Heating Costs to Stay Close to Last Year’s Levels
NIPSCO’s home heating bills are expected to stay about the same as they were last year. Projections released by the company Wednesday say an average residential customer can expect to pay about $390 on gas bills between November 1 and March 31. Continue reading
NIPSCO to Seek Increase in Natural Gas Bills
More than 25 years have gone by since NIPSCO has increased natural gas base rates, but that may change.
NIPSCO along with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission are looking to increase natural gas base rates as the cost to comply with state and federal safety standards has increased. According to a NIPSCO press release, the company has made additional investments in its aging gas system to improve service to 820,000 customers while maintaining more than 17,800 miles of pipelines.
Free Trees Available to NIPSCO Customers
Did you know strategic tree planting can help conserve energy and reduce energy bills? The Arbor Day Foundation program Energy-Saving Trees is offering 375 free trees to NIPSCO customers to simultaneously assist clients and the environment.
An online tool helps customers estimate the annual energy savings that will result from planting trees in the most strategic location near businesses or residences. The Energy-Saving Trees tool uses peer-reviewed scientific research from the USDA Forest Service’s i-Tree software to calculate estimated energy savings. Additionally, the tool estimates other benefits including cleaner air and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Continue reading

Two local waterways will be getting some upgrades, thanks to grant funding from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The latest round of Lake and River Enhancement program grants includes funds for projects benefiting Lake Maxinkuckee and the Tippecanoe River.
Utility Assistance Programs Continue, After Winter Disconnection Moratorium Ends
Low-income residents who are delinquent in their heating bills may have their natural gas service disconnected.
