Marshall County Commissioners to Determine Funding for Possible LED Lighting Project

The Marshall County Commissioners aren’t sure if they will be able to fund a proposed LED lighting project.

According to a previous presentation from Bruce Breeden from the Telemon Energy Corporation, the initial cost of upgrading the current lighting to LED standard in the Marshall County Building, Marshall County Courthouse and the engineering buildings would be around $73,500 for new fixtures, lights and tubes. The county could be eligible for an energy rebate of about $9,300 from NIPSCO with a net cost of $64,200. The county would save $31,000 in a year with a return of investment in two years.

County Attorney Jim Clevenger was able to review a proposed contract between the county and the company for the project with a few minor changes being made. However, Commissioner Mike Delp said last week that the county council struck $100,000 from the maintenance budget for 2019 so it’s unclear if funding will be available for the project.

It was noted that the council members are expected adopt the budget on Oct. 8 and the commissioners will know then if the project can move forward. The project has to be complete by the end of November to ensure the reimbursement funds.

The commissioners will discuss it further at their Oct. 15 meeting.
