John Glenn School Board Discusses Enrollment, Transfers

The John Glenn School Board members may need to make a decision to add to their facilities if enrollment numbers keep trending in an upward fashion.

The school board members discussed enrollment and transfers in a work session Tuesday night. According to Recording Secretary Lisa Sleek, they reviewed data from the past five or six years and found that enrollment increases 1.5 percent each school year. They analyzed classroom size per building and the number of students per class. The discussion included function and capacity at each school with the numbers they are working with and what the corporation could see in a few years.

John Glenn School Board Approves Stipends

The John Glenn School Board members approved stipends for a member of the custodial staff and bus drivers when they met last week.

According to Recording Secretary Lisa Sleek, the custodial director has been out on sick leave since June. The employee filling in was given a $7,000 stipend for performing duties above and beyond his normal duties.

The school board approved a stipend for bus drivers to charge buses when they are at their residences. A $100 engine block stipend was approved to keep up with costs associated with running the buses.

John Glenn School Board Considers Superintendent’s Contract

The John Glenn School Board considered the superintendent’s contract retroactive to July 1, 2017. The contract is valid through June 30, 2019.

The contract included a two percent increase as that is in line with increases approved for the staff at the school corporation. The base salary was advertised at $117,346 with a $5,000 annuity. The school corporation will pay all but $1 on a life insurance premium on a $110,000 term life insurance policy which is $171 a year. The corporation will also pay all but $1 of the Corporation Family Health/Dental/Optical Insurance plan until the superintendent reaches the age of 65. The cost will be $23,363 a year.

John Glenn School Board Looks to Keep Start of School under Local Control

John Glenn School Board President Jeff Johnson told fellow board members Tuesday night there is legislation that could be considered in 2018 that would push back the start date of the school year for all schools. In the beginning, legislation involved mandating the the start date on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Johnson said there is talk now that the mandated start would be the third week in August.

“We want to try as much as we can to keep this under local control so that we can set, according to our community, and our parents and children, when school should start and when it should end,” said Johnson.

John Glenn School Board Discusses IPad Purchase

The John Glenn School Board members discussed the purchase of 220 iPads for kindergarten, first and second grade students Tuesday night.

Technology Director Andrew Stegemiller explained that the current computers were purchased in 2012 and cannot be updated anymore. He said the computers were reliable and will get a good trade-in price. They need to be traded in soon to keep that pricing.

The John Glenn School Board members will meet tonight where the board will honor the Urey Middle School Spell Bowl Team on their State Spell Bowl Championship. The board also plans to discuss the purchase of 220 iPads for students in kindergarten through the second grade in the amount of $64,680.

The John Glenn School Board will meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the North Liberty Elementary School.

The John Glenn School Board members will consider approval of early graduation for two seniors when they meet tonight. While the board members had the requests during their last meeting, the pair was not present. The board asked High School Principal William Morton to notify the students that they must appear at a board meeting to be considered for early graduation. Three similar requests were approved when students met the board earlier this month.

The John Glenn School Board members will consider the 2017-2018 Master Teacher Contract for approval when they meet tonight. The contract will determine wages based on teacher evaluations from the previous year.

The board members will appoint a library board member to the St. Joseph Public Library and consider early graduation requests for five students. Superintendent Richard Reese will also update the board on corporation information and the building principals will have their regular reports. Continue reading

John Glenn Education Foundation Grants Approved

Nine grant applications were recently approved to receive funds from the John Glenn Education Foundation.

Superintendent Richard Reese told the John Glenn School Board members this week that $7,500 to $8,000 worth of grants were awarded to teachers who applied for project funding. He added that the names of teachers who applied for the grants will be released at the next school board meeting in November along with the specific projects and grant amounts.

John Glenn School Board Approves Resolution to Reduce Appropriations

The John Glenn School Board approved a resolution Tuesday night that would reduce an appropriation by $69,000 to carry over into next year’s budget.

Business Manager Tom Bendy explained that the school board has purchased all of the school buses they are going to purchase this year and the board has the opportunity to move the unused funds to next year’s budget.
