Improving internet access for residents and businesses owners in Culver is a project that town officials are looking into.
The Culver Redevelopment Commission recently met with representatives from Marshall County Fiber LLC about the possibility of installing fiber optic cable to improve access to the internet in the area.
At the last town council meeting, CRC member Rich West shared that the Redevelopment Commission has been working on finding a good fit for Culver for several years and noted that it is an issue that needs to be addressed. Continue reading
Special summer hours have been established for Culver Town Hall and town officials will be trying out a new summer hour schedule as well.
During the summer season, Culver Town Hall will be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. At last week’s Culver Town Council meeting, a new employee schedule was proposed.
President Ginny Bess Munroe said she collaborated with Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim and Town Manager Jonathan Leist about a “morale-boosting” schedule that will give employees a chance to enjoy their summer. Continue reading
Culver Town Council members voted to amend a motion made in a previous meeting at the request of Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim.
At Tuesday night’s town council meeting, Clerk-Treasurer Heim requested that the council members amend the motion made at an April meeting pertaining to the purchase of new radio-read water meters. Continue reading
Culver Clerk-Treasurer Karen Heim sent out a notification to alert residents that crews will be conducting hydrant flushing this week.
She mentioned that during the process, water may appear to have a “rusty” color, however, it is still safe to drink. Heim stated that this is a necessary procedure conducted biannually that removes rust from the town’s water distribution system. Continue reading
Culver Community Schools is offering pre-school classes next school year and parents and students will have a chance to come check things out next week

Culver Community School students will be participating in e-Learning in next school year.
Superintendent Karen Shuman said that when school board members met on Monday, they approved the calendar for the 2018-2019 school year.
Shuman explained that the calendar has three E-Learning days built in, to allow students and teachers to get familiarized with the system. Continue reading
At last week’s Culver School Board meeting, it was announced that the Junior/Senior High cafeteria renovation project is coming along well. Superintendent Karen Shuman told board members that the first phases of the project will be wrapping up as soon as the new furnishing comes in.

Many Marshall County positions will be up for election this year including the Judge for Superior Court 1 as well as the County Prosecutor, Clerk, Auditor, Recorder, Assessor and Sheriff. Wednesday marks the first day that a declaration of candidacy may be filed.
According to Jaley Schinbeckler with the Marshall County Clerk’s Office, elections will also be held for all township trustees and board members and the county commissioner in District 1 as well as county councils in districts 1 through 4. Two seats are open on the Argos and Culver Town Councils and one seat is open for Bourbon Town Council. Continue reading
Marshall County has recently been dealing with extremely windy and snowy weather conditions. Around this time of year, pet owners are reminded to bring pets indoors or provide adequate outside shelter in order to keep animals safe this winter season.
Marshall County Humane Society Executive Director Nancy Cox said she and members of her team spend every morning, responding to calls of animals left outdoors without adequate food, water or shelter.
She stated, “People just need to use their common sense. If you’re cold, they’re cold. Like right now, I would feel that being out in this weather without proper shelter is cruelty and neglect.” Continue reading
Culver Beach Lodge is hosting a special “Silly Safaris” Presentation tomorrow, featuring animals from the North Pole. The free, all-ages program will start at 11 a.m. ET and last until noon.
According to the organization website, this specific program focuses on animals native to the Arctic Circle, one of the world’s harshest environments.The presentation will feature a reindeer and may also include another mammal, a bird, a frog, a reptile, and a few insects to display the variety of creatures that inhabit this area. The National Weather Service has issued an urgent winter weather advisory for Marshall County, including the cities of Plymouth, Bremen and Culver. The advisory will be in effect on Thursday, January 4 from 1 a.m. until 7 p.m. ET.
Lake effect snow will be impacting the area so residents should prepare for reduced visibility at times and difficult travel conditions during morning and evening commutes. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches, with localized amounts of up to 10 inches are expected. Continue reading
The Culver Community School Board members approved a few different field trip requests when they met earlier this week. Superintendent Karen Shuman stated that one of the requested field trips will be funded by the Parent Teacher Organization.
Shuman said, “Our PTO provides behavior incentive trips to multiple students throughout the school year and one that’s coming up at the end of January is a trip to Plymouth for our 6th graders to go bowling as a reward for them doing what they’re supposed to do in school.” Continue reading
Last week, while Culver Community Schools were conducting NWEA testing, they concurrently held Career Pathway Presentations for some junior and senior high school students.
Superintendent Karen Shuman shared that one of the speakers was school board member Bill Sonnemaker. He came and spoke to students about working as an engineer for 40 years. He told them how he worked in the aero-space industry and provided some details about particular projects he tackled within that field.
A decision has been made to not move forward with a Pre-Kindergarten program at Culver Community Schools in January of next year. However, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman that doesn’t mean it is completely out of the question.
Shuman said, “We do hope to come next school year, when we do kindergarten round-up we’ll be doing a pre-k round-up at the same time.” The superintendent explained that they’ll determine whether or not to implement a program depending on the number of people who attend the round-up for children who would be heading into preschool. Policies adoption was the main focus of the Culver Community School Board meeting that took place Monday night.
Superintendent Karen Shuman said that some of the policies and procedures were already in place but the board needed to have a first reading in order for them to be entered into the system. She said one policy that was noticeably changed had to do with background checks.

When the Culver Community School Board met last week, they received a presentation from FFA President Alex Temme who told them all about Culver’s involvement in this year’s National FFA Conference.
FFA members were able to watch the rodeo there as well as exhibit some of their agricultural skills. Superintendent Karen Shuman said that Culver students experienced some success with their soil judging presentations, getting ranked as one of the top ten teams to compete. Continue reading
When the Culver Community School Board met last week, Superintendent Karen Shuman shared a few updates about a remodeling project that will be tackled in the near future.
All three elements of the project; lighting, furnishing and flooring, would be focused in the cafeteria at the Junior/Senior High School building. According to Principal Brett Berndt, certain elements of the cafeteria date back nearly 50 years. During a previous school board meeting he mentioned how the floors have not been renovated since they were installed in 1968. Continue reading
Culver Community School Principal Brett Berndt brought up a few potential renovations to the Junior/Senior High School building at a board meeting last Monday.
Berndt informed the board members that the flooring in the cafeteria has been the same since 1968. He said that while that does mean it has held up for nearly 5 decades, he believes it is time for an upgrade. Additionally, he said the bathrooms across from the gym are from the same time as well.
Berndt said they’ve been looking into potentially renovating those two areas since the changes could reflect well on the school corporation when individuals come for various events. Continue reading
Officials at Culver Community Schools are asking local parents to help them determine whether or not there is a need for Pre-Kindergarten classes for 4 and 5-year-olds within the town of Culver and the surrounding area.
Superintendent Karen Shuman is encouraging interested parents to contact the corporation office and says parents should be ready to answer questions, such as whether or not the child is currently 4 or 5 or if they will be 4 by August 1st of 2018.
They’re also collecting information about preferences for AM, PM or all-day classes. They want to know whether or not the parent is currently working or attending school and if the child would need transportation in order to attend a Culver Pre-K class. Continue reading
