More Funding Cuts to Highway Department Budget

The Marshall County Highway Department will need to find ways to cut additional funds from its operating budget this year.

The county council received word that the Department of Local Government Finance made the decision to reduce $23,406 from the highway department’s budget. The initial decision on how to make those cuts fell on the county council, but Councilwoman Penny Lukenbill urged the governing body to allow Highway Administrator Laurie Baker and Highway Supervisor Jason Peters to make those funding reductions as they see fit. The council will review those cuts at their May meeting after they are advertised.

Public Hearing Planned to Reestablish Cumulative Capital Development Fund

A public hearing is set to gather input on the reestablishment of the Cumulative Capital Development Fund in Marshall County.

County Attorney Jim Clevenger explained that a procedural issue halted the process a year ago, but this movement is needed to awaken the issue. The public hearing will allow taxpayers to weigh their opinion on a tax increase not to exceed $.0333 per $100 of assessed valuation of property. An approximate amount of $400,000 is anticipated that can be used on capital investments in the county. The highway department was used as an example as they are in need of new equipment where funding is lacking.

Marshall County Council Approves Community Crossings Funding Arrangements

road-stripingThe Marshall County Council made some funding arrangements Monday for the county’s Community Crossings projects, but lowered the cushion for potential cost overruns in the process. The state Community Crossings program provides a 50-50 match for road projects. Back in August, Marshall County was awarded a $1 million grant, the maximum available through the program. Marshall County Commission President to Ask for Appropriation for MCEDC Contract

The Marshall County Council will consider an additional appropriation request made by Commission President Kevin Overmyer in an upcoming meeting.

He explained to the council members this week that the council cut $20,000 from the budget and that is needed to satisfy a contract with the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation. Overmyer said the contract is for $150,000 and the additional appropriation is needed for the rest of the year.

Overmyer said Executive Director Jerry Chavez has been working with the towns in Marshall County to improve economic development, which is a vision with both the Marshall County Economic Development Corporation and the county.

Marshall County Council Discusses Commissioner Appropriation Request

The Marshall County Council discussed an additional appropriation request by the county commissioners for the Metronet project in the amount of $119,750.19.

Commission President Kevin Overmyer explained that the money was leftover in their line item in 2014 and was reverted to the Rainy Day Fund. Overmyer asked that the money be appropriated to finish paying bills for the Metronet project. He said the entire amount will not be spent and whatever is left can be put back into the Rainy Day Fund.
