Charges are expected to be filed against inmates who were reportedly in a fight in the Marshall County Jail Wednesday night.
Officers from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Plymouth Police Department and Plymouth EMS were called to the jail as a fight broke in a cell block. Police say before assistance arrived jail officers on duty successfully locked down all of the inmates in the cell block where it had occurred.
The Plymouth City Council approved a measure this week to assist American Containers in the company’s effort to expand.
Owner Michael Isban approached the council with plans to expedite the manufacturing of products at the facility with the addition of specialized equipment. The goal is to increase the competitive edge in the market and to create jobs.
The Bourbon Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee held an open house last night to gather public opinion on the proposed Envision Bourbon 2030 Comprehensive Plan.
The plan covers several elements including population, housing and neighborhood conditions, economy and labor force trends, land use, roads and utilities infrastructure, public facilities, and protection of natural and cultural resources.
Plymouth Airport Manager Bill Sheley asked the city council this week for an exception in its firearm laws in order to address the hazards geese pose at the airport.
He noted that the birds cause a serious danger to aircraft due to the possibility of a mid-air collision. Sheley said the airport has maintained a federal migratory bird depredation permit for several years. The permit allows the airport manager to eliminate the threat of geese. Sheley said he is unable to take any geese as the airport is in the city limits and there is an ordinance regulating the discharge of firearms in the city limits.
Marshall County EMA Director Clyde Avery asked the county council for an additional appropriation to pay for the contractor who helped with updating the Hazard Mitigation Plan.
Avery explained that the contract is for $16,656.06. The invoice will be paid and Avery said he will submit the necessary paperwork to the Department of Homeland Security for reimbursement. The plan is renewable every five years. Continue reading
The building that formerly housed a gas station at the corner of State Road 106 and State Road 331 has been razed. The Town of Bremen is working to clean up the area to present a cleaner spot in that part of town.
Director of Operations Trend Weldy said more work is planned.
Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist presented the town council this week with a deed of dedication for the streets for the Sandhill Farm workforce development housing project.
The proposed housing project will be constructed on W. Jefferson Street. The streets in the project may be extended as needed. The housing development will include 24 apartment units. It is part of the town’s Stellar Communities Designation Program application.
During their meeting Monday evening, the Triton School Board established a shooting club for Triton High School and approved a club sponsor. The club sponsor will be Ryan Meister, who has served as a coach for Triton in the past and is the owner of the ‘Back 40 Sporting Clays’ shooting range in Bourbon.
Superintendent Donna Burroughs said a number of students already participate in shooting sports in 4-H so there is an apparent interest in a club of this kind. She explained that target shooting competitions are a growing trend around the country. Continue reading
Pastor Thomas Keb of the Plymouth Baptist Church is working closely with the Sabine Neches Baptist Area Association to provide assistance to Texans impacted by the recent natural disaster. Keb said a semi-trailer will be parked at Plymouth Baptist Church and he’s looking to fill it with requested items that can help assist victims in regaining some type of normality in these trying times. Two drivers were injured in a semi and passenger car accident at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Oak Road late Wednesday night.
When emergency personnel arrived at the scene, they found a passenger car driven by Jade N. Sorba, 23, of Monterey, on the north side embankment on U.S. 30. Police say a semi driven by Foster Providence, 68, of Brooklyn, New York, was in an empty field east of Arby’s.
James Bend and James Pheibush of the Marshall County Probation Department requested an additional appropriation in the amount of $50,000 to help sustain the care of juveniles in treatment centers.
Bend said it’s been an extraordinary year in this aspect.
The Plymouth City Council received a request to allow urban chickens on properties within the city limits.
The current city ordinance prohibits chickens in city limits.
City Attorney Sean Surrisi said there were some property owners years ago who housed chickens on their property and the ordinance had to be enforced. It was then when a similar request came before the council, but several residents complained about having them in the city.
A few building projects are in the works at the Triton School Corporation. The heating and cooling system at the elementary school needs replaced and the corporation is looking to build a high school gymnasium and replace the roof at the high school.
In an effort to move forward with those projects, the Triton School Board held a public hearing during the Triton School Board meeting. There were no public comments during the bond project hearing. Continue reading
The Culver Town Council approved the formation of the Culver Economic Development Commission.
A public hearing on the matter was held Tuesday night where a question about the purpose of the commission was raised. Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe explained that the commission would be able to deem a residential project eligible for tax abatement. She further explained that a residential tax abatement differs from a commercial tax abatement, but the financial incentive is the same. A recommendation for a residential tax abatement has to be presented by the commission to the town council for approval.
A contractor and a homeowner were recently granted seven building permits and those projects will be starting soon in Bremen.
Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said construction will be starting this fall on South Jackson Street. Condos and spec homes will be built in the area. Three will be built to start with more to be constructed once the completed homes are sold.
In an effort to raise funds for the remaining renovations needed at the Rees Theater in downtown Plymouth, theater seats will be on sale at the Plymouth Farmers’ Market from 7:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Rees Theater was originally established in 1940 and doors closed in 2010. The Town of Culver will be honoring the memory of victims of the World Trade Center attacks, fallen heroes and their families with a 9/11 Heroes 5K Run and 1 mile fun run/walk on Saturday, September 16. In the meanwhile, event coordinators and volunteers have been lining the course with American flags.
Walkers and runners of all different ages and abilities are asked to come out to the Culver Academy Naval Building this Saturday to show support for veterans, their families and first responders. Four people were arrested Monday, after police reportedly found 53 grams of crystal methamphetamine at a Plymouth home. Shortly after 7:00 p.m., officers with the Marshall County Drug Task Force, Indiana State Police, Plymouth Police Department, and Marshall County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant at a home in the 7700 block of Rose Road.
Five vehicles were involved in a chain reaction car accident at the intersection of North Michigan Street and Jefferson Street in Plymouth on Monday afternoon.
Plymouth police say Carolyn Woolley of Plymouth was traveling west on Jefferson Street when she entered the intersection of Michigan Street and collided with a vehicle driven by Beth Baker of Knox as she was stopped in the eastbound lane. Woolley and Baker met in a head-on crash which caused a chain reaction with damage sustained to two other cars. Woolley tried to back up and hit a fifth vehicle.
The Culver Town Council members are in support of a petition against INDOT’s proposed J-turn intersection at U.S. 31 and State Road 10 and Dewey Street and another at U.S. 31 and State Road 110.
The J-turn intersection would not allow a vehicle to turn left at a crossroad. Instead, the driver has to travel quite a distance in order to turn left, or the opposite direction to go back past the crossroad to turn left again to the desired location. INDOT feels that the construction would create a safer way for traffic to maneuver.
