Fall Property Tax Bills Due Today

The second installment of property tax bills is due today.

Mailed payments must have today’s postmark on them in order to be considered on time. Enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your payment if you wish to receive a receipt.

Marshall County Treasurer Angie Birchmeier reminds taxpayers that payments can be dropped off in a drop box on the south end of the county building or make payments in person in the treasurer’s office in room 206 in the Marshall County Building at 112 W. You’re Just a Few Clicks Away From Helping the Bread of Life Community Food Pantry

The Bread of Life Community Food Pantry does so much for Marshall County but currently, the volunteer-driven organization is looking for a little help in return. The interesting thing is that you can help simply by shopping online.

The nonprofit recently moved locations to the north side of Plymouth. They have the option to purchase the building so they are currently fundraising to acquire funds for the down payment of $40,000. The total price of the building is $165,000 and the loan needs to be procured prior to February of 2019.

Representatives of Bread of Life announced that individuals can help them by using smile.amazon.com. When you make online purchases, just designate Bread of Life Community Food Pantry Inc as a recipient and a percentage of your purchase price will be donated to the cause. Continue reading →

Santa Claus is Coming to Town a Little Sooner than You’d Think

Santa will be visiting Plymouth a whole month early! On Saturday, November 25th Santa will arrive on a fire truck during the Holiday Parade at 6 p.m.

The parade will be on Michigan Street, starting at Adams Street and ending in River Park Square. Santa will make his way to River Park Square for the tree lighting ceremony. The Park Department will perform a light show after the Christmas tree is lit. When the light show is complete, Santa will be at the Marshall County Museum for photos. Model trains will be running at the museum starting at 11 a.m.

Hot chocolate and cookies will be available all evening. Grab the whole family and come out for a night of festivities featuring Old Saint Nick as the guest of honor.

Bourbon Traffic Stop Results in Three Arrests

A few hours after midnight on Sunday, Bourbon Police Officer Adam Kraning conducted a traffic stop on south Main Street at 13th Trail, according to a media advisory.

In a police report written by Kraning, he said he stopped driver Jared Whitfield for traffic and vehicle violations shortly before 2:30 a.m. The officer said that while speaking with Whitfield he smelled the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the vehicle and the driver’s breathe. Marshall County Health Administrator Submits Grant Request

Marshall County Health Administrator Christine Stinson asked the county commissioners this week to apply for a grant to help test known IV users for Hepatitis C.

She explained that the Indiana State Association of County and City Health Officers offered mini grants in the amount of $2,500 to be used at the discretion of the applicant’s choice. Plymouth High School Students Discuss World War II History Trip with School Board

Some Plymouth High School students got to experience World War II history firsthand this past summer. The Plymouth School Board had the chance to hear about their trip during Tuesday’s meeting.

A group of 13 students spent roughly two weeks visiting Europe in July, according to teacher Ryan Wolfe. “This trip was focused on World War II and the Western Front,” he explained. “So everything that we did was really focused on World War II, which curriculum-wise, really hits both World History and U.S., but it was probably more focused on U.S. History, which students take as a junior. Most of our kids had had either World or U.S. prior to going.”

The trip took the students to England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Austria. Six of the students were at Tuesday’s meeting to highlight some of the places that stood out to them. Some focused on the beaches of Normandy, and U.S. and German cemeteries, while others reflected on visits to a Nazi concentration camp and a Holocaust memorial. Continue reading →

Community Provides Input to Senator Donnelly at Ancilla Farm Bill Listening Session

On Friday, Senator Joe Donnelly visited the Ancilla College campus to hold a listening session over the farm bill that is currently being written. Before Donnelly talked with group gathered in Cana Hall about business, he got comfortable by removing his tie and greeting individuals in the crowd.

Ancilla President Kenneth Zirkle began the event by briefly discussing the agriculture program at the college, stating that when they started two and half years ago they only had three individuals involved, now that number is up to nearly 50 agriculture students.

Agriculture director Tim McLochlin introduced the senator, but first he acknowledged all the community members who help make Ancilla’s agriculture program so immersive and impactful.

During the session, various individuals voiced their concerns about the needs of the agriculture community. One individual spoke about how the current farm bill does little to help the dairy industry and suggested that more needs to be done with supply and control management. Many people spoke about the importance of family-run farms and asked Senator Donnelly to build the bill with generational farms in mind. Continue reading →

Marshall County Prosecutor Asks to Apply for Grants

Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman approached the commissioners with a request to apply for two grants.

Prosecutor Chipman explained that IPAC Drug Prosecution Grant worth $2,000 was already approved. The money will be used for undercover drug buy money. He said the Marshall County Drug Task Force is very aggressive and that grant money will replenish the money supply for those efforts. The commissioners unanimously approved the grant request. You’re Invited to the Ribbon Cutting for the New INDOT Sub-District Facility

This Tuesday, community members are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting event for the new INDOT Sub-district facility in Plymouth. The event will commence at 11 a.m.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held for this facility back in August of 2016. The original structure dated back to 1978 and was no longer able to meet modern needs.

Shortly after the ribbon cutting ceremony, Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter will dedicate the road serving the new facility as Jack Greenlee Drive, in honor of a former city councilman and mayor. Jack Greenlee served as a city councilman for many years and served as Mayor of Plymouth for two terms from January of 1992 through December of 1999. Mayor Greenlee passed away in March of 2015. Senter will dub this road with his name as a way to honor his service to the community and commemorate his memory. Continue reading →

Tickets on Sale Now for John Glenn Education Foundation Gala

A fundraising gala for the John Glenn Education Foundation is set for Saturday, Feb. 17 at Swan Lake Resort.

Superintendent Richard Reese told the John Glenn School Board this week that a silent auction is planned along with music and dinner. The cost is $75 a couple. All proceeds will go toward the John Glenn Education Foundation that helps fund out-of-the-box projects for teachers to boost the education of students. Continue reading →

American Heart Association Seeks Donations for the Little Hats, Big Hearts Program

Can you knit or crochet? Your skills are needed to help the American Heart Association with their Little Hats, Big Hearts program.

Now through December 31st the AHA is collecting knitted or crocheted red baby hats to distribute in Indiana hospitals in the month of February, American Heart Month. The program is meant to raise awareness of heart disease, the number one killer of Americans and congenital heart defects, the most common birth defect in the country.

They are seeking hats for newborns and preemies made of red yarn that is either cotton or acrylic, medium to heavy weight that can be machine washed and dried. Don’t worry if you’re not the knitting or crocheting type, yarn can also be donated to the cause. Continue reading →

Marshall County Commissioners Discuss E-Gov Contract

The Marshall County Commissioners discussed a contract to update the look of the county’s website.

IT Director Michael Marshall said this contract is for web hosting and web design for the county.

“It’s a company called e-gov out of Indianapolis,” explained Marshall. “They have Hendricks, Vigo, Kosciusko, Deerborn, Dekalb – they have quite a few counties that they host. They have some tools as far as document management, event planning, and calendaring that we just don’t have right now on our site. Continue reading →

Local Police Departments to Participate in State-Wide Enforcement

The chances of being involved in an automobile accident increase greatly around the Thanksgiving holiday season since more drivers are utilizing the roadways. Driving under the influence or failing to wear your seat belt can make matters even worse.

Although the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and Purdue University Center for Road Safety estimate that 93 percent of Hoosiers buckle up, last year more than half of Indiana’s fatal crashes involved drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts. Impaired-driving also did quite a bit of damage in 2016, resulting in nearly 2,100 injuries and more than 210 fatalities.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Plymouth and Bourbon Police Departments will join forces with more than 230 law-enforcement agencies across the state to spot violations to the Indiana seat belt and impaired driving laws. Through the weekend after Thanksgiving, expect to see an increase in saturation patrols and checkpoints and more random patrols. Continue reading →
