Phase One of the renovation to St. Joseph Regional Hospital in Plymouth is now complete.
The Health System is undertaking an extensive two-part construction project. Phase One oversaw the expansion of the Emergency Department – which now sits at a comfortable 8-thousand square feet.
The community of Culver is celebrating the 100th birthday of its Carnegie Library with the ribbon cutting of an exhibit designed to keep future generations excited about reading. The town’s StoryWalk consists of 18 stations along Lake Maxinkuckee in the community park. Each houses a different laminated page from a children’s storybook to encourage families to stroll through the park share a story. The Culver-Union Township Public Library and Culver Park Board teamed up on the project. The first book is “The Ice Cream Hotel” by local author Jack Johnston. StoryWalk books in the Park will change every two weeks from June through September. Continue reading
The grand opening won’t be held until later this year, but renovations on Phase One of Freedom Park in Plymouth are nearing completion.
Upgrades at the park started a few years ago when a group of citizens wanted to consider the possibility of the City of Plymouth having its first all-inclusive playground. Fundraisers were conducted, allowing the group to raise enough money for the City of Plymouth to begin contributing.

A local police department is raising money for a new K9. The Bremen Police Department’s existing drug and tracking dog, Quido, is seven years old and on the downhill side of his service with the department. He joined the force in 2011, and has been involved in nearly 100 narcotic arrests. Quido has also helped to track fugitives and locate missing persons. Continue reading
The American Cancer Society helps save more than 400 lives a day with the help thousands of caring volunteers. For thirty years, the ACS Relay for Life has united communities globally to remember lost loved ones, celebrate survivors and work to raise funds for cancer research. The Town of Culver is now turning its attention to adopting an amended water rate ordinance.
During a special meeting Tuesday night, the Culver Town Council introduced the language – which will likely be approved in mid-June. Culver is working to upgrade its water treatment facility, the costs of which call for an increase in water rates.

The former Republican State Representative and Vanderburgh County Auditor paid a visit to Knox on Wednesday to meet with Starke County officials. The state auditor oversees payroll, local government distributions, and bill payments.

Students in the Plymouth School Corporation are learning about health and, at the same time, raising funds for cancer research.
Riverside Intermediate School raised $3,500 and presented a check on Tuesday to Marshall County Relay for Life. This is the second year the school has undertaken several events to help fundraise for a cure, according to a news release.
The Plymouth School Board wants more information about expanded transportation options before proceeding. They are looking into offering bus routes into the outlying communities of Argos and Culver in order to give students who live outside the district but want to attend Plymouth schools an opportunity to do so. The Culver Town Council has taken another step toward upgrading its water treatment facility.
During a special meeting on Tuesday night, an ordinance that allows a bond issuance to take place was considered. Culver is in the process of undertaking a $1.6-million upgrade to its water treatment facility. Fees and other expenses put the project in the $2.2-million range.

A fire training facility received conditional approval from the Marshall County Commissioners on Monday morning.
The site has been in the works for some time, but plans are to move forward with construction for firefighter, police, and EMS training opportunities. The training tower recently received a recommendation from the Marshall County Jail Holding Corporation to host the site on the jail property adjacent to the employee parking lot.

The Plymouth School Corporation is preparing to make a few changes to both its finances and curriculum.
During Tuesday night’s regularly scheduled meeting, School Board members will consider adopting curricula recommended for social studies courses. Typically, committees review the available options for some time prior to introducing the curriculum for students.
