The Plymouth City Council discussed a lease in order to house the mayor’s office and the clerk-treasurer’s office while the city building renovation project is in progress.
City Attorney Sean Surrisi explained that the offices were going to stay in the city building during the project. However, during a pre-construction meeting with the contractors it was felt that moving the offices would be the most effective way to get the project done in a timely manner.
A busy downtown Plymouth bridge will be closed today for maintenance.
Marshall County Highway Supervisor Jason Peters said the Jefferson Street bridge will be closed so log jams can be removed from underneath the bridge. The closure is expected to take one day.
The Culver Town Council will hold a public hearing on an ordinance that establishes the Culver Economic Development Commission. The three-member commission will be formed to consider a residential tax abatement in the proposed workforce housing development. One appointment will be made by the town council president, one from the town council and one from the county council.
The Shady Rest Committee will meet today to review soft proposals for organizations wishing to occupy the Shady Rest Home on Lincoln Highway in Plymouth.
The proposals indicate use, ownership, structure, ability to sustain operations and maintenance, and an approximate number of individuals who would benefit from services.
The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety will open quotes for a crack seal project and discuss the final change order for the Plymouth-Goshen Trail water main extension project when they meet tonight. They will also approve a resolution regarding Halloween and designating surplus property for sale at auction. The members will also receive an update on the Fourway computer product tower equipment.

The Triton School Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed lease on the building project. The school is looking to build a high school gymnasium, replace the heating and cooling system at the elementary school and the roof at the high school. Following the public hearing, the board plans to adopt a resolution to authorize the execution of the lease, approve the issuance of bonds and accept post-issuance procedures.
Officials with the Culver Boys and Girls Club are excitedly preparing the space and organizing the itinerary for opening day of the brand new Culver Club Teen Center. The meet and greet is coming up on October 2nd and will be in room 919 of the new Middle School Culver Club Teen Center from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The Marshall County Council will meet this morning with a full agenda. The council members will discuss all of the line items in the 2018 budget in a hearing after their regular business meeting.
James Bend and James Pheibush will have a funding request for care of inmate patients while Sheriff Matt Hassel and Annette Osborn from WIC will request a waiver for a 90-day probationary pay. EMA Director Clyde Avery will present an additional request for a mitigation plan update with the EMA Performance Grant and the personnel committee members will discuss updates to several positions. Marshall County Building Commissioner Chuck DeWitt and his staff is keeping busy this construction season with several hundred permits issued this year. That’s what he reported to the Marshall County Commissioners this week.
“We have over $25 million in permit values and we have 405 building permits and over 110 electric permits. That gives us about 600 permits that we’ve issued so far this year. We’re on track to have the busiest year we’ve ever had,” said DeWitt.
Culver Community Middle/High School is collecting items for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Throughout the month of September, students and staff are gathering non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, bathroom items, baby supplies, and pet supplies.
Indiana’s lieutenant governor is calling on Hoosiers to donate blood, to help communities impacted by hurricanes. Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch says Hurricane Irma is expected to have a widespread impact like Hurricane Harvey, and blood supplies are already low.

The Plymouth School Board got an update Tuesday on first graders’ reading progress. Students from Menominee Elementary School demonstrated what they’ve learned during the first month of the school. Principal Steven Boyer explained that first grade is when students make the most progress, when it comes to reading foundation.
The John Glenn School Board approved a Teacher Appreciation Grant Policy this week.
The members agreed to enact a 25 percent increase for highly effective teachers over effective teachers.
The Marshall County Building Inspector asked the commissioners for permission this week to attend a workshop next month on renewable energy including solar power and generators.
Chuck DeWitt mentioned that an ordinance regarding solar panels will be coming soon to Culver and to Marshall County that will permit small, medium and large solar energy systems. He said the ordinance will include safety for the public and first responders when installing solar energy systems and education on when a power outage occurs. Continue reading
The Plymouth City Building will undergo renovations soon which will cause the relocation of the mayor’s office and the clerk-treasurer’s office.
Beginning on Sept. 19, the pair of offices will be at 118 N. Michigan Street and will remain there until the completion of the renovation project. The drop box on Garro Street will be available for any payment of water bills after hours.
The John Glenn School Board set a deadline date and the maximum number of transfer students in each grade. The board voted Tuesday night to allow 45 students per grade with a deadline date of May 25, 2018 for this school year.
Superintendent Richard Reese recently reported to the board that the number of transfer students into the corporation this school year totals 401. The number of transfer students last year was 376.

September serves as National Recovery Month, which celebrates the gains made by those fighting addiction. While Marshall County continues to battle an ever-growing opiate problem, there are also many success stories to celebrate.
According to Community Corrections Director Ward Byers, through collaborative efforts with criminal justice partners and local treatment providers many client recoveries have been reported. Marshall County Community Corrections provides assistance with substance abuse recovery by hosting a support group ever Monday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Life Enrichment Center in Plymouth. Volunteers with Trinity United Methodist Church in Plymouth are giving of their time to help mentor local elementary school children. The Kids Hope USA program pairs churches with local schools with the goal of meeting the emotional, social, and academic needs of children.
