Plymouth FOP to Hold Fundraiser on Saturday

The Plymouth FOP #195 is hosting a fundraiser this Saturday to assist the Plymouth Shop with a Cop program.

The Christmas for Kids motorcycle ride registration will be at the Young Amphitheater in Plymouth from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The entry fee is $15 and $10 for a passenger. The ride will start at the Young Amphitheater and end at the VFW Post on Lake Avenue in Plymouth. The benefit begins at 2 p.m.

Culver Town Council Holds off on Movie Theater Project

The Culver Town Council decided Tuesday night to hold off on moving forward with any plans for the Culver movie theater.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist recommended waiting to see what the budget outlook will be in 2018 and pick up the conversation then. The property is for sale and it could sell by the time the council feels comfortable in revisiting a proposal to study facility and rehabilitation needs for the building.

Marshall County Commissioners Address Generator Needs

The Marshall County Commissioners discussed generator needs at the highway department.

Maintenance Director Doug Masterson along with Gary Masterson approached the commissioners with a quote from M & J Services and Michiana Contracting, Inc. to provide a generator for the highway department. The highway department does not have a generator to help with department needs when there is a loss of power. The commissioners discussed the need previously and Doug Masterson presented the quotes for approval Monday morning. Continue reading

Marshall County DUI Task Force Successful in Recent Enforcement

The Marshall County DUI Task Force recently conducted a sobriety checkpoint in the 1500 block of North Oak Drive in Plymouth and several officers participated in that enforcement.

According to Marshall County DUI Task Force Coordinator Patrolman Troy Ulch, 153 vehicles were stopped while 195 vehicles were allowed to pass around the checkpoint. New Walkerton Library Planned

A new library is planned in the town of Walkerton.

Library Director Traci Stewart told MAX 98.3 FM News that Larry Hiler donated a parcel of land on the corner of U.S. 6 and Washington Street which will make the facility easier to see than its hidden location at 300 Michigan Street. The library has been at that location for the past 20 years.

Marshall County Commissioners to Meet Today

The Marshall County Commissioners will meet this morning with several items on the agenda.

EMA Director Clyde Avery will be discussing several grants and other items of interest to come before the board today. Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter will discuss the Michigan Street Bridge Memorial for the late Tom Chamberlin. Maintenance Director Doug Masterson will talk about a generator for the highway department while Health Department Administrator Christine Stinson will seek the third reading on the fee schedule and well installation and maintenance ordinances. Stinson will also present a proposal to demolish the Ramey House as it has been declared an unsafe building.

History Boat Cruise Sails Wednesday

Learn more about legendary Hoosier author Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s connections to Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver during a special history boat cruise.

Local historian Jeff Kenney will lead the cruise which will dock at the cottage of Clemens Vonnegut, Jr. which was recently restored to its late 1800s architecture. The effort won recognition and awards statewide. Attendees of the boat cruise will learn about the extensive history of the Vonnegut family who occupied a number of cottages on Lake Maxinkuckee’s east shore in the later 1800s.

Charges Pending in Intimidation Case

A Plymouth man is in the Marshall County Jail after an alleged intimidation incident.

An officer from the Plymouth Police Department was called to a residence in the 200 block of East Lake Avenue after receiving a call about intimidation with a weapon. The officer spoke to the victim and later found the suspect, Jorden McCoige, a short distance away from the scene.

Shady Rest Home Committee Members Gather for First Meeting

The members who serve on the committee to seek non-profit uses for the Shady Rest Home facility in Plymouth met for their organizational meeting Thursday morning.

The Shady Rest Home was in the care of The Bowen Center, but a few new state standards caused the administration to shut down operations. The Bowen Center staff gave care to adults suffering with mental incapacities. Due to that decision, the Shady Rest Home is now back in the hands of the Marshall County Commissioners. John Glenn Building Trades Class Sells House

John Glenn School Board

The John Glenn Building Trades Class recently sold the house the students worked on during the last school year.

John Glenn School Board member Dennis Holland updated the board Tuesday night and said the house sold at approximately $173,000.

The class does not have a specific project for a community member for the upcoming school year so the students will build another spec house to be sold when completed. Holland said land has been purchased in the Walnut Crossing area just north of town.

Plymouth Factory Closing at Year’s End

Officials at TreeHouse Foods, Inc. announced Thursday that they intend to close a Plymouth factory.

Bay Valley Foods, Inc., at 1430 Western Ave., in Plymouth will cease operations at the end of the year. Another facility in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota will close as well as a facility in Dotha, Alabama.

According to a news release on their website, TreeHouse Foods, Inc. made the decision as part the company’s restructuring plan.

Argos Woman Arrested on Burglary, Theft of Firearms Charges

An Argos woman was arrested Friday, July 28 on a warrant that includes several theft and firearms charges.

Police say Jamie Kay Beam, 28, was with an accomplice and pried a garage door open at a residence on N. Maple Street in Argos on Jan. 17, 2017. The owner reported two flat screen televisions stolen as well as nine firearms and a home entertainment subwoofer, according to court documents.

Marshall County Road Projects One Day Behind Schedule

The Marshall County Highway Department is in the middle of chip and seal operations on several roads in Marshall County and crews are currently running one day behind in their schedule.

Highway Supervisor Jason Peters said chip and seal work will be done on Pioneer Drive from the city limits to State Road 17 today. That road will be closed in order for this process to be complete. Overmyer Drive will also be closed from State Road 17 to the city limits. That project is expected to carry over to Friday. Overmyer Drive will remain closed until chip and seal work is done.
