Culver Town Council Discusses Traffic Ordinance

The Culver Town Council members discussed a proposed traffic ordinance during their meeting Tuesday night.

The ordinance designates a congested motor vehicle traffic and pedestrian area on Lakeshore Drive and signage will be placed between 508 Lakeshore east to 824 Lakeshore Drive. The ordinance also creates a no parking zone for 50 feet from the intersection on both sides of the street on Batabano and South Plymouth Street.

Bremen Downtown Revitalization Project Delayed

The downtown revitalization project which includes new streets, sidewalks, curbs and lighting for the Town of Bremen has been postponed.

Bremen Director of Operations Trend Weldy said the delay could be to the town’s advantage.

“With help from INDOT, they’re going to pay for a few more things that’s going to save us some extra money,” said Weldy. “They’ll pay for environmental studies and things like that that we won’t have to pay for. It’ll save us $20,000 to $30,000 or maybe a little more when it comes to that.”

Jesse Bohannon Announces Candidacy for State Representative in District 17

Republican Jesse Bohannon announced his candidacy this week for the District 17 Indiana House of Representatives race in 2018. He was defeated by Jack Jordan in the 2016 election for this seat.

Bohannon currently serves as a member of the Bremen School Board, is a business owner and a graduate of Bremen High School and Bethel College in Mishawaka.

One Injured in Accident

A South Bend man was injured in a one vehicle accident Tuesday morning on Fir Road north of U.S. 30 near Bourbon.

Marshall County police say Shawn D. Geraghty was traveling south on Fir Road at 2:45 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle on an icy road surface. His silver 2014 Mazda went off the east side of the road and struck a Marshall County REMC pole.

County Council Discusses Job Description Change for Position at Highway Department

Marshall County Commissioner Kurt Garner presented the county council members Monday morning with a proposed job description change pertaining to the highway administrator’s position.

Garner explained it is the thought to change the highway administrator’s position to a county engineer/director position. The highway administrator’s position will become vacant at the end of the year with the retirement of Laurie Baker on Dec. 29. Garner said the addition of an engineer to the highway department would be beneficial.

Plymouth City Council Discusses Resolution for Future Tax Abatement

The Plymouth City Council members Monday night reopened the public hearing from the last meeting that included discussion surrounding a resolution to consider the River Gate South Development, LLC as an economic development target area and an economic revitalization area. The approval of the resolution would set up the River Gate South housing development project for a tax phase-in for seven years, meaning no real estate taxes would be paid the first year but it would phase in until full taxes are realized after the 7th year.

Culver Town Council to Meet Tonight

The Culver Town Council will discuss several ordinances when they meet tonight for their regular business meeting.

Two ordinances will be considered on second and third reading. One ordinance includes changes to the Code of Ordinances. The ordinance allows the current Code of Ordinances manual to be updated to current regulations. The second is a service weapon ordinance that allows a retiring police officer, who has served at last 20 years in law enforcement, the ability to retain his or her service weapon, badge and identification cards.

Two Arrested on Dealing Cocaine Charges

Two men were arrested Sunday after police reportedly found cocaine following a traffic stop.

Shortly after midnight Sunday, a Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped a 2008 black Dodge Charger in the Walmart parking lot in Plymouth. The driver, 29-year-old Angel Fernando Ruiz-Flores, of Cincinnati, Ohio, was reportedly found to have never possessed a driver’s license.

Marshall County Commissioners Consider E-Gov Contract

The Marshall County Commissioners discussed an E-gov contract with IT Director Michael Marshall last week.

Marshall presented the contract at a previous meeting which calls for a contract with E-gov out of Indianapolis for web hosting and web design. He said they have the skills necessary to produce a user-friendly county website and give it a fresh look. Marshall said he would still be responsible for content.

Plymouth BOW and City Council to Meet Tonight

The Plymouth Board of Public Works and Safety members will meet tonight where the 2018 intergovernmental agreement between Marshall County and the City of Plymouth for planning services will be discussed. If that agreement is approved, Plan Director Ralph Booker will present the 2018 planning services agreement.

The board members will also consider the 2018 animal control services agreement.

John Glenn Education Foundation Gives Grants to Teachers

The members of the John Glenn Education Foundation are looking for funds to help supply grants to teachers.

The first round of grants was awarded in September. Teachers can apply for foundation grants for their out-of-the-box ideas to enhance the learning experience for students. Grants will also be awarded for enhanced training, teaching techniques or new styles of learning.

Four Arrested on Drug Charges in La Paz

Four people were arrested on drug charges Tuesday afternoon in La Paz.

According to police, Indiana State Police Troopers from the Bremen Post were called to check on a suspicious blue Dodge pickup at the Speedway station on U.S. 6 just east of old U.S. 31. Police say four people were inside the vehicle. The Plymouth K9 unit was dispatched to the scene and reportedly indicated the presence of drugs. Methamphetamine, needles and other drug paraphernalia were allegedly found during a probable cause search of the vehicle.

Five Arrested on Drug, Nuisance Charges in Plymouth

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrested five people after executing an arrest warrant Wednesday night.

According to police, an officer arrived at an apartment in the 500 block of W. Jefferson Street and found the suspect inside along with four other people. Officers reportedly found heroin inside the apartment along with methamphetamine and syringes. All five people were taken into custody.

EMA Director Successful in Obtaining Grants

Marshall County Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery told the county commissioners this week that he was successful in obtaining two grants.

“We did receive the grant agreement that has been signed and returned to the state so we’re waiting for their signatures and then we’ll have fully executed agreements for both the EMPG competitive grant, which is a $5,000 grant we’re going to use to conduct the table top exercise next year,” said Avery. “We also received the $3,000 grant that we will be using to provide ICS 300 and ICS 400 classes for the county.”

John Glenn School Board Looks to Keep Start of School under Local Control

John Glenn School Board President Jeff Johnson told fellow board members Tuesday night there is legislation that could be considered in 2018 that would push back the start date of the school year for all schools. In the beginning, legislation involved mandating the the start date on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Johnson said there is talk now that the mandated start would be the third week in August.

“We want to try as much as we can to keep this under local control so that we can set, according to our community, and our parents and children, when school should start and when it should end,” said Johnson.

Haeck Court Hearing Continued

A hearing to consider a motion to return restitution in the case of former Marshall County Highway Superintendent Neal Haeck has been continued until Thursday, Jan. 4.

Marshall County Prosecutor Nelson Chipman told MAX 98.3 FM News that Marshall County Superior Court No. 1 Judge Robert O. Bowen was unable to be in court on Thursday for the 9 a.m. hearing so it was continued. Prosecutor Chipman said it’s preferred that Judge Bowen preside over this hearing.
